1786 Johann Probst Map Germany Holland Belgium Austria Vienna Berlin Poland Ulm

An Original Antique Map: Not a Reproduction! Description: It is an original antique map approximately 235 years old by Johann Michael Probst from his Atlas Minor ex Tabulis. The map is well documented in the cartouche which states that it is by Ioh. (or Johann) Michael Probst, Augsburg. The map was printed by his son Iohan Georg Probst, as stated in the bottom margin. Size: The entire page measures 7 1/2 by 11 3/4 inches (20x30cm) with the printed area slightly smaller as seen in the main pic. Condition: Good condition for its age, blank on reverse, with original handcoloring as issued. There are a some nicks out of the bottom and soft creasing on the right corner, otherwise it is a strong impression with bright color printed on a high cotton page with the copper plate marks embossed in the margins. Overall, a very nice example with a rich antique qaulity that is rare to find, see the pics and description below. Check out my other items. Be sure to add me to your favorites list. Antique map, Lugdunum vulgo Lion / Vienna vulgo Vienne de France

FULL TITLE: Lugdunum vulgo Lion / Vienna vulgo Vienne de France. Two fine engravings of the City of Lyon and the town of Vienne in the Departement of Rhone. Lyon was founded as a Roman colony in 43 BC by Munatius Plancus, a lieutenant of Caesar, on the site of a Gaulish hill-fort settlement called Lug[o]dunonfrom the Celtic sun god Lugus (‘Light’, cognate to Old Irish Lugh, Modern Irish Lu) and dunon (hill-fort). The name was latinised as Lugdunum; Lug was equated by the Romans to Mercurius. 25 kilometres to the south of Lyon lies the fortress town of Vienne with the main castle on Mont Pipet. Publication: Civitates Orbis Terrarum 1598. Georg Braun & Franz Hogenbergs Civitates Orbis Terrarum, stands as one of the greatest monuments of late 16th and early 17th Century European cartography. Published in Cologne, Germany in a series of six volumes between 1572 and 1617/8, and, when finally completed, comprising nearly 550 City views and plans, the Civitates is also one of the most valuable sources for the study of Renaissance urban cartography.
