One of the great references on the history of Paris by one of the masters of French historiography of the Ancien Régime. The 25 maps from this work are used by Jaillot to make both his large map of the city in 1777 and his atlas of the city in 30 sheets in 1778 The maps were literally cut up by Jaillot and assembled as paper collages to make both these derivative works. The maps are based on and expand from the work of Delagrive. The relation between these three publications and the process involved is detailed in Boutier 302. Maps dated 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. 1719 Antique Senex Postal Map Of France / Paris Bretagne Brittany Normandy

TITLE: A New Map of France, Shewing the Roads & Post Stages thro-out that Kingdom, as also the Errors of Sanson’s Map Compared wth ye Survey Made by Order of ye Late French King. ORIGIN OF THE MAP: John Senex, A New General Atlas, Containing a geographical and historical account of all the empires, kingdoms and other dominions of the world: with the natural history and trade of each country. DATE OF ISSUE: Daniel Browne, Thomas Taylor, et al in 1721, LONDON, UK. SIZE: The sheet measures: 23 1/2″ x 20 3/4″ (60 x 53 cm), t he map image: 22 3/4″ x 20″ (57 x 51 cm). He was also a surveyor, globemaker, and geographer. As a young man, he was apprenticed to Robert Clavell, a bookseller. In 1728, Senex was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, a rarity for mapmakers. The Fellowship reflects his career-long association as engraver to the Society and publisher of maps by Edmund Halley, among other luminaries. He is best known for his English Atlas (1714), which remained in print until the 1760s. After his death in 1740 his widow, Mary, carried on the business until 1755. Thereafter, his stock was acquired by William Herbert and Robert Sayer (maps) and James Ferguson (globes). Most of maps we sell come from ancient atlases that were damaged and beyond repair. Very large antique copper engraved plan of the environs of Paris in 1798, just after the French Revolution. The map is illustrated with a nice cartouche, decorated by a scene of the Revolution: the storming of the Bastille in 1792. 78 x 54 cm / 30,7 x 21,2 inches. Condition: good condition, in old colors. 1764 Zannoni Map France Ancient Gaule 5th c. Aquitania Paris Germany Holland

An Original Antique Map: Not a Reproduction! Description: It is an original antique map with elaborate decorative border, original handcoloring and a centerfold as issued. The map is well documented in the cartouche which states that it is by Rizzi-Zannoni, de l’Academie Royale de Sciences et Belles Lettres de Gottinque [University of Gottingen, Germany]. Dated 1764 on the map. The map was published in the Atlas Historique de la France Ancienne et Moderne (Paris: Desnos, 1766), a copy of the original title page is included for authenticity. Size: The map image area between the neat lines measures approximately 10×11 inches (25x28cm) on a 11 1/2 x15 (29x38cm) page. Condition: Very Good condition for its age, approximately 10×11 inches (25x28cm) on a 11 1/2 x15 (29x38cm) page, blank on reverse, with original handcoloring and a centerfold as issued. There are a couple of minor light smudges in the margin and slight soft bends on the upper corners not affecting the map area, otherwise it is very clean with beautiful color on a strong flexible cotton page with the copper plate printing marks embossed in the margins.
