Title of the map. “INSULAE DIVI MARTINI ET ULIARUS Vulgo L’ISLE DE RE et OLERON”. The north is oriented to the left side of the map. The map depicts the coasts of Poitou and Saintonge, and gives a very detailed representation of these 2 islands. The map is decorated with 2 nice cartouches and 3 nice compass. Willem Blaeu was the founder of the Blaeu cartography dynasty, the finest mapmakers of the Golden age of Dutch cartography. He studied astronomy with Tycho Brahe at Uranienborg, and moved to Amsterdam to establish a shop in 1605, close his contemporaries and rivals Johannes Janssonius and Jacob Colom. He produced globes at first. The sons of Willem, Johan and Joan, joined him in the firm. They produced their first atlas together in 1630 the “Atlas Appendix”. Five years later, their produced their “Atlas Novus”, edited in 4 languages. After the death of Willem, Joan expanded the Atlas Novus into the Atlas Major, the largest atlas of its time. Large antique copper engraved plan of Caen, in Normandy, France, by Nicolas DE FER, dated 1710, 18th century. The map is engraved by P. His earliest wellknown map of the canal de Languedoc, realised in 1669. In 1697, he published his first world atlas. In 1695, De Fer, with several other notable French mapmakers, became founding contributors to the French Bureau of Maps and Plans. This bureau, created to deal with the technical and strategic problems of overseas commerce and exploration, was part of the Royal Academy of Sciences’s Ministry of the Navy and Colonies.
