Title of the plan. PLAN DU LABIRINTHE DE VERSAILLES à Paris Chez le Sr. Dans l’Isle du Palais sur le Quay de l’Orloge a la Sphere Royale 1715. Unusual antique copper engraved plan of the labyrinth, a famous part of the gardens of Versailles, by Nicolas DE FER, 18th century. The Labyrinth of Versailles was built by André Le Nôtre from 1668 in the gardens of the castle on an idea of Charles Perrault, then in charge of defining the iconography of the royal artistic programs. The thirty-eight fountains that make it up – a thirty-ninth fountain was later added – were built between 1672 and 1674, at the crossroads of the alleys, after the installation of the hydraulic network. Each of them, adorned with polychrome lead animal sculptures, seed stones and shells, depicts an episode from Esope’s fables. His earliest wellknown map of the canal de Languedoc, realised in 1669. In 1697, he published his first world atlas. In 1695, De Fer, with several other notable French mapmakers, became founding contributors to the French Bureau of Maps and Plans. VERY LARGE DOUBLE-SIDED FOLDING MAP OF FRANCE IN FOUR WALLETS UTILISING AN UNUSUAL MOUNTING METHOD. MAJOR ANSELL’S PATENT METHOD OF MOUNTING ingenious early 20th century folding map system, utilised by Edward Stanford map sellers of London. France (with parts of Belgium, Spain and Switzerland): a set of 4 large double-sided lithographic maps in red cloth covers, with a total printed area of approx. 6.9 square metres, mounted in ingenious form according to Major Ansell’s patented method. 4 double-sided folding sheet maps, each enclosed within red cloth covers, gilt lettered on upper covers’N. Printed instructions in English on how to use’Major Ansell’s Patent Method of Mounting’ on inside of front and rear covers. Maps segmented and laid on linen, as per the fashion. The various parts comprised of composite elements of Henry Barrère’s’Touring Club de France’ map, cleverly re-arranged to fold-out in a number of handy ways. Each of the 8 printed sides measuring 1.32m x 0.66m, giving a total printed area on both sides of approx. 6.9 square metres. The 4 maps fitting snugly into a bespoke leather case by Edward Stanford, with his stamp on underside of front flap’Edward Stanford / 12.13.14 Long Acres. Very Good condition maps in Good only condition leather case. The front flap of the case has a split along its length, but is still attached. Some rubbing and darkening to leather. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely. The 4 double-sided sheets are designed to be folded out in conjunction with each other in an ingenious way, according to numbers displayed down each of the 8 printed sides, based on’Major Ansell’s Patent Method of Mounting’. Comprised of composite elements of maps by cartographer Henry Barrère, the unique folding method means that the same side of most sheets carry geographically distinct parts (with the North Sea area on the same side as a central European strip, for example). This method of mounting is either a work of genius, or a recipe for angst and frustration as we experienced when we tried to follow the printed instructions!
