Vins de CHAMPAGNE WINE MAP Vignobles de France. R? My HETREAU / LEBLANC 1954

Les Vignobles de France – Vins de Champagne. Decorative vintage colour wine poster map, 1954. Caption below picture:’Les Vignobles de France – Vins de Champagne. He was commissioned in the 1950s by the Comit? National de Propagande en Faveur du Vin, a French government agency tasked with promoting the nation’s wines and tourism to the wine growing regions, to create a series of illustrated maps entitled “Les Vignobles de France”. There were supposedly eleven of these: R? Gion Est, Normandie, Champagne, Bordeaux, Rh? Ne, Bourgogne, Provence, Alsace, Loire, Roussillon & what was then the French colony of Algeria. However, Provence & Roussillon were combined into a single map, and we have never seen examples of the maps for R? Gion Est or Normandie – neither of which regions are particularly noted for their wine. His highly decorative, exuberant maps display a joyful mid-century aesthetic; they have become much sought after. Barjavel said of him In the world around him, it is always springtime. He has a blossoming tree in his heart; a comment evident in these wonderful maps. The locations of the main white and red wine producing appellations are shown with grape bunch icons of the appropriate colour. IMAGE SIZE: Approx 67.5 x 83.5cm, 26.5 x 32.75 inches (Large). What is an Antique Map. The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers. The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type i. Sea or celestial charts or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land. The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection. Starting a collection & pricing. Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on. As specialised dealers, we frequently work with first time map buyers who are just starting their collection. Classical Images was founded 1998 and has built an excellent reputation for supplying high quality original antiquarian maps, historical atlases, antique books and prints. 1782 Gouvernement de Champagne et Brie MAP FRANCE Regions CHAMPAGNE & BRIE (JM)

1782 Gouvernement de Champagne et Brie MAP FRANCE Regions CHAMPAGNE & BRIE (JM). A fine and rare large original antique map titled. Carte des Gouvernements de Champagne et Brie. A highly detailed and decorative large map by Rigobert Bonne of the French regions of Champagne and Brie. The map depicts the departments of Champagne and Brie from Picardie to Franche Compte and from Ile-de-France to the Duchy of muxembourg. Historically the province of Champagne was bounded on the north by the bishopric of Liege and by Luxembourg, on the east by Lorraine, on the south by Burgendy and on the west by Ile-de-France and by Picardy. Overall size of map is 48cm x 35cm with large margins, perfect for mounting & framing CONDITION: Excellent overall condition with hand colouring and the centrefold as issued. 1743 – 1793 was a Paris based bookseller, engraver, and map publisher active in the mid to late 18th century. Lattre published a large corpus of maps, globes, and atlases in conjunction with a number of other important French cartographic figures, including Janvier, Zannoni, Bonne and Delamarche. He is also known to have worked with other European cartographers such as William Faden of London and the Italian cartographer Santini. Paris court records indicate that Lattre brought charges against several other period map publishers, including fellow Frenchman Desnos and the Italian map engraver Zannoni, both of whom he accused of copying his work. Lattre’s offices and bookshop were located at 20 rue St. Cartographers Rigobert Bonne (1727 – 1794) was one of the most important French cartographers of the late 18th century. Bonne was born in Ardennes at Raucourt, France. He taught himself mathematics and by eighteen was a working engineer. In the subsequent years, Bonne became one of the most respected masters of mathematics, physics and geography in Paris. In 1773, Bonne succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the. Depot de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period – most on equal-area projection known erroneously as the’Bonne Projection’. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th century and early 18th century towards a more scientific and practical aeshetic. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is high regards for its details, historical importance and overall aesthetic appeal. Bonne died of edema in 1794, but his son Charles-Marine Rigobert Bonne continued to publish his work well after his father’s death. Jean or Robert Janvier fl. 1746 – 1776 was a Paris based cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Janvier true first name is a matter of debate, as it appears as it often appears as either Jean or Robert. More commonly, Janvier simply signed his maps Signor Janvier. By the late 18th century Janvier seems to have been awarded the title of “Geographe Avec Privilege du Roi” and this designations appears on many of his latter maps. Janvier worked with many of the most prominent French, English and Italian map publishers of his day, including Faden, Lattre, Bonne, Santini, Zannoni, Delamarche, and Desnos.
