Original Antique 16th C Map Of France Abraham Ortelius Atlas 1573 Galliae Regni

Antiques, Fine Art & Collectibles. Original Antique 16th C Map Of France Abraham Ortelius Atlas 1573 Galliae Regni. DESCRIPTION Antique original 16th C map of France from the book Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Printed by Francis Hogenberg in 1573 at Antwerp the maps are tipped onto stubs at the centerfold. This map is of Galliae at that time with France being only a small part of the modern day France. The legend of this map names the author whose map Ortelius adapted, in this case Ioanne Ioliveto (Jean Jolivet). This richly engraved map is filled with topographical features and numerous cities. The large strapwork cartouche contains text, and a coat of arms is displayed in the stipple engraved sea. Dutch text on verso. Part of a larger atlas book which was disbound and incomplete when found. This version contained 70 individual maps with 102 contributing cartographers to its catalogue auctorum. In the preface Ortelius credits Franciscus Hogenberg with engraving nearly all the maps. The 1573 Additamentum to the atlas is notable for containing Humphrey Llwyd’s Cambriae Typus, the first map to show Wales on its own. A great addition to your rare antique map collection. MEASUREMENTS Map unfolded measures viewer measures 16″ tall by 20.75″ wide and weighs 2oz. CONDITION In good condition considering age and use. The paper shows signs of age and has some staining and discoloration throughout. There is some tape in the bottom center (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description). ORTELIUS’ main work, the. 70 Maps on 53 sheets etched by German painter Frans Hogenberg (1535-90), since his first Edition (in latin, 1570), was such an extraordinary commercial success it was re-printed and published without interruption from 1570 onwards (while author living – 25 editions, post mortem {Ortelius’ death in 1598} until 1612 always updated with new maps). Text in Italian, by. Traveler with excellent literary knowledge, Army engineer and diplomat (at the service of Grand Duke of Tuscany FERDINANDO de’MEDICI, during the dreadful wars against Turkey, and theoretician of trade potentiality of the newborn free port of Livorno). He met and knew ORTELIUS in 1591 and the present text was written during years 1602-03; the edition, updated with a large number of maps, came to light and was issued in Anvers in 1608. With maps of districts in France and statistical data about each region. A hard to find book. They have some wear on the edges and curve very slightly outward.
