Matthaeus MERIAN was a Swiss engraver, he worked in Francfort (Germany). He is the father of the painter of flowers and insects Anna Maria Sybilla Merian. Topographiae Germaniae has been edited in 16 volumes, from 1642 to 1654. After the death of Matthaeus Merian, his son Matthaeus Merian le Jeune continued the work of his father, and produced other volumes untill 1688, with other descriptions in Europe, as France “Topographiae Galliae”, Italy, and Creete. In total, Topographiae contains 92 maps and 1486 copper engraving plates with 2142 views of cities, castles, villages, monasters, divided in 30 volumes. The views of Merian are famous with them perspective view. Size with margins : 35 x 32 cm / 13,7 x 12,5 inches. Condition : good condition, large margins, in colors, a smooth aureol in lower margin. Title of the map. “CARTE DU PAIS ET SOUVERAINETE DE DOMBES”. Large unusual and detailed copper engraved map, of the DOMBES, with LYON, MACON, Bourg-en-Bresse.. A nice cartouche with the Arms of the Duke of Bourbon handed by 2 angels. Jean IV Le Clerc was an engraver, bookseller and publisher in Paris and Tours. Son of the parisian printer and print publisher Jean III Le Clerc, brother of the librarian and print publisher David Le Clerc. Born in August 16, 1560, he belongs to the family of the Parisian engraver François Desprez and the painter Jérôme Bollery. Between 1590 and 1594, he worked for the printer-librarian Maurice Bouguereau for the production of “Le Théatre François”. He got in 1619 the privilege of six years to engrave the maps of the provinces of France and the portraits of the patriarchs and princes of the Hebrew people with chronological history. He published, engravings of Jacques Granthomme, Pierre I Firens, Leonard Gaultier and Thomas de Leu. H e died in Paris in 1621 or 1622. His son Jean V Le Clerc, also an engraver and publisher of prints, was a bookseller in 1618. Size with margins : 52 x 40,6 cm / 20,4 x 15,8 inches. Condition : good condition, in colors. Large unusual and detailed copper engraved map, of the southwest of France, with LA ROCHELLE, ILE DE RE, ILE D’AIX, a large part of ILE D’OLERON.. The descriptions by descriptions were collected – drawn up by Gabriel Michel de La Roche-Maillet Angevin, advocate in Parliament – at Her Majesty’s Privy Council.
