This set of 6 antique, framed, engraved and hand-colored maps shows 6 different regions/areas in France. Each of these engraved, antique maps has illustrations surrounding the centered map that show scenes of the most important features of that area in the 1850s. The maps themselves are in excellent antique condition with no visible flaws. Being framed behind glass for the last 50-70 years has preserved them. Each map had hand water-coloring applied a long time ago. A few of the colors are still quite vibrant, while most have aged into warm, muted tones. Please see all photos. These maps, without folds, are from the large format edition of the Atlas National Illustre de France, by Victor Levasseur, published in Paris in 1852. Each map image measures approximately 11 by 17 inches and each framed map measures 15.5 by 20.75 inches. The six maps are as follows. De Lot et Garonne. Venable’s Fine Arts, 1615 Conn Ave. Was a renowned DC gallery for many decades. The gallery, which also did framing and restoration work, was founded by Samuel J. Venable in 1892 in downtown Washington. At its height during Venable’s tenure, the business employed 13 framers. It moved to 1615 Connecticut Ave. NW at the end of World War II and occupied various premises along that avenue until it closed at the end of 1997. Two of the maps have ink stamps from another framer in nearby Alexandria, Virginia, that is no longer in business. One of those frames has been reinforced around the back of the frame with tape, as has one of the Venable frames. A couple of the frames have small scratches on the gold painted wood where the frames were stacked without padding between them. Each framed map weighs about 3 lbs. I pack very well… However, using free local pick-up will save you a lot. Every vintage and antique item has a story to tell. Small, as-made anomalies speak to the uniqueness of each piece. And nothing ages without time showing its mark in some way. A century of being used or held and admired, packed and moved, cleaned and displayed, will create the telltale signs of genuine age. I personally take packages to the nearest U. Post office at Ladysmith, Virginia. That is also where I conduct FREE in-person pick-up for any item. Please contact me if you have any questions.
