Original Antique Maps and Prints. Optical Antique Print-SEA-PORT-TOULON SUR MER-FRANCE-Leizelt-1770. Description: Source unknown, to be determined. Artists and Engravers: Made by’Balthasar Frederic Leizelt’ after an anonymous artist. Balthasar Frederic Leizelt (active 17501800) was a German artist and copperplate engraver working from Augsburg. Subject: Antique print, titled:’Der alte See Hafen zu Toulon. This print shows the old sea port in Toulon-sur-Mer in France, with a large number of figures in the foreground. This is an optical print, also called’vue optique’ or’vue d’optique’, which were made to be viewed through a Zograscope, or other devices of convex lens and mirrors, all of which produced an optical illusion of depth. Condition: Very good, given age. A few creases and a few stains. Image trimmed on all but bottom side. Short left, top and right margin remargined, using contemporary paper reinforced with acid free archival tape. Please study scan carefully. Size (in cm): The overall size is ca. 40.4 x 31.7 cm.
