The image below shows an enlarged cross section from the centre of the map to show the level of printed detail. This map is folding hence the centrefold line may show on the image below. The map was published by the (British) War Office in 1943, with magnetic north dated to June 1943 – a year before the D-Day landings. Road diagrams are stated to be based on Michelin Tourist Maps revised through to 1939; the map includes a reliability diagram showing parts of the map later revised from air photographs. The D-Day landing beaches are situated just to the west of this map section. The Allied armies began to break out of the landing area and east through the area covered by this map during August 1944.
