Some interior terrain is shown, street plans, building locations, fortifications, cultivated lands, sounding depths, shoals and rhumb lines all create a fine cartographic appearance. Title in scroll cartouche with distance scale. Nice looking example, pleasing age patina, any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. 12 3/4″ H x 9 1/4″ W. Title of the map. PLAN de la Ville et Citadelle de NICE Assiégée par M. Le Marechal de Catinat, et rendue au Roi le 2 Avril 1690. Large antique copper engraved plan of Nice (France), by Nicolas DE FER, dated 1690, 17th century, with the list of main edifices in the titel cartouche. The history of Nice is marked by the wars between Savoy and France The French then occupy Savoy and, in 1691, Marshal Catinat takes Nice. The city was however restored by Louis XIV in 1697 (Treaty of Turin). His earliest wellknown map of the canal de Languedoc, realised in 1669. In 1697, he published his first world atlas. In 1695, De Fer, with several other notable French mapmakers, became founding contributors to the French Bureau of Maps and Plans. This bureau, created to deal with the technical and strategic problems of overseas commerce and exploration, was part of the Royal Academy of Sciencess Ministry of the Navy and Colonies.
