1627 Meisner Town View MONTARGIS France Straight and Narrow Saw Allegory

14.5 cm x 9.5 cm copperplate engraving, 18.5 cm x 14 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Eberhard Kieser, Frankfurt, 1627. We are pleased to offer this scarce original print of a view of the French town of Montargis. From the monumental atlas of town views compiled by the poet Daniel Meisner and the publisher Eberhard Kieser. First published as Thesaurus Philopoliticus in 1623 and later known as the Sciographia Cosmica , this work is a fascinating combination of two popular genres – the Emblem Book and the Book of Town Plans, e. The Civitates of Braun and Hogenberg. Under Kieser’s supervision, the collection of town plans with allegorical imagery continued to be expanded after Meisner’s death in 1625, eventually comprising over 800 engravings in an edition published by Paulus Fürst in Nürnberg in 1678. This extraordinary collection of European town views features cities and towns from diverse countries and provides a fascinating window into the 17th century, all enhanced by emblematic imagery that is often cryptic, sometimes even bizarre but always unique and masterfully engraved. The print is a close copy of the 1572 Braun and Hogenberg view of the city created for the famous Civitates Orbis Terrarum and remarkably despite the considerably smaller format retains all of the detail of the Civitates plate. To get a sense of the minute precision of the engraving work consider that the entire image (not including verses) is contained in a 14 cm x 7 cm rectangle! Each engraving is distinguished by a motto above the image and epigrammatic verses (usually in Latin and German) beneath. The detail of the engraving work in these small prints is remarkable, and in this example is elegantly enhanced by exceptionally skilled hand colour work. Among the master engravers and illustrators that contributed to this series were the renowned Matthäus Merian. Johann Eckhard Löffler, Sebastian Furck, Georg Keller, Balthasar Schwan, Christian Stimmer and possibly Meisner himself, who conceived the work and contributed the verses. Meisner was born in what is now Chomutov in the Czech Republic (also known as Comothau or Komotau) but little is known about his life although the introduction to the work gives him the rather lofty title of “Poeta Laureatus”. The motto Rectum Per Dura Carpit Iter – loosely rendered as “Stay firmly on the straight and narrow” is echoed in the verses and with the imagery of the saw cutting precisely down the middle of the beam. Condition – Please note carefully: This 385-year-old print is in excellent condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with prominent platemark on hand made laid paper, image area essentially pristine, minor creasing bottom margin extremities. Image shown somewhat enlarged for clarity, no text on verso. Welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions. Such charges are typically collected by the courier, e. 1627 Meisner (Braun & Hogenberg) ORLÉANS Town View France STAG CHARGING LEOPARD

14.5 cm x 10 cm copperplate engraving, 17.5 cm x 15 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Eberhard Kieser, Frankfurt, 1627. We are pleased to offer this scarce panoramic view of the French city of Orléans. From the monumental atlas of town views compiled by the poet Daniel Meisner. The view is of course a reduced close copy of the famous Braun and Hogenberg view. Of the city including the Gothic Cathédrale Sainte-Croix d’Orléans severely damaged by Huguenots in 1568 and the island bridge across the Loire. Remarkably, this miniature print is so meticulously engraved that none of the detail of the much larger format Braun and Hogenberg image is sacrificed in this plate. To get a sense of the minute precision of the engraving work consider that the entire image (not including verses) is contained in a 14 cm x 7 cm rectangle! Each engraving is distinguished by a motto above the image and epigrammatic verses (usually in Latin and German) beneath. Meisner was born in what is now Chomutov in the Czech Republic (also known as Comothau or Komotau) but little is known about his life although the introduction to the work gives him the rather lofty title of “Poeta Laureatus”. Here the allegorical imagery and Meisner’s Latin and German verses reflect on the motto “Audacia Sine Robore Obest” which can be loosely rendered as “Boldness can convey the strength of an oak” illustrated by the stag charging the leopard using his antlers as a powerful weapon, the hunted turning the tables on the hunter. A quintessential example of the unique qualities of the Meisner prints, this exceptionally fine example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Condition – Please note carefully: This 385-year-old print is in excellent condition as can be ascertained from photo, strong impression with prominent platemark, image area essentially pristine. I mage shown somewhat enlarged for clarity, no text on verso. Welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions. Such charges are typically collected by the courier, e.
