Title of the map. LES DUCHEZ DE LORRAINE, ET DE BAR, et les Evechez de Metz, Toul et Verdun, Par N. De Fer, Géographe de sa Majesté Catolique et de Monseigneur le Dauphin A PARIS Chez l’auteur avec privilege du Roy 1705. Of the duchey of Lorraine and Bar, in eastern France, by Nicolas DE FER, 18th century. The map is engraved by P. It shows a small part of Luxembourg and of Germany. It extends from St Dizier and Mouson in west, Luxembourg in north, Philisbourg and Fribourg in east, to Epinal and Colmar in south. His earliest wellknown map of the canal de Languedoc, realised in 1669. De Fer has created this plan when he was in service of the King of France Louis XIV. In 1697, he published his first world atlas. In 1695, De Fer, with several other notable French mapmakers, became founding contributors to the French Bureau of Maps and Plans. This bureau, created to deal with the technical and strategic problems of overseas commerce and exploration, was part of the Royal Academy of Sciences Ministry of the Navy and Colonies. Description: Large engraved map of Lorraine France, the antique map shows many historical places centerend around Nancy and is copperplate engraved with a nice hand coloring. The old rococo titel cartouche is surrounded with hunting scenes and the mile scale cartouche with a draped cloth. This is the 1st edition of 1692 map La Lorraine by Jaillot, the 1695 edition published by Pierre Mortier is a reprint with small differences among which the scale cartouche. Map maker: Alexis Hubert Jaillot was a French cartographer mapmaker and publisher. Jaillot, published alone or in combination with Sanson or other engravers. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) will be supplied on request. Sheet: 37 x 24 inches. 94.5 x 61 cm. 34.5 x 21 inches. 87 x 54 cm. Condition: The map as a whole is in good condition with beautiful colors. The edges and center fold have some non-disturbing restorations, and the map has a small spot. The map is decorated with a nice cartouche, style rococo, engraved by Haussard. The map extends from Bar Le Duc in west to Phaltzbourg, and Thionville in north to Epinal in south. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy published “The Atlas Universel”, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondy’s integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer of the king Louis XV. Gilles often signed maps as “Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as “Robert de Vaugondy”, or added “fils” or “filio after his name. The Robert de Vaugondy family were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family. Very good condition, handed colored, strong paper. 18th Century, dated 1756, Paris. 65,5 x 51 cm / 25,5. The map is very detailed with major cities rivers. The map extends from St Dizier in west to Brisach and Strasbiurg in eastn with Metz, Toul Nancy in the center. A large and decorative cartouche, with an allegoric scene. Matheus SEUTTER began his career as an apprentice under tutelage of JB Homann. Then, he left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. He was one of the most prolific Publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI, with the title of “Imperial Geographer”. Size with margins : 63 x 53,3 cm / 24,8 x 20,8 inches. Small aureols in the lower margin, antique colors, well engraved, on strong paper. C1607 Hand Color Map of LORRAINE. Detailed Configuration 414 years ago. An outstanding hand colored map entitled. Lotharingia Ducatus, vulgo Lorraine. Willem Janszoon Blaeu was a Dutch cartographer, atlas maker and publisher. Along with his son Johannes Blaeu, Willem is considered one of the notable figures of the Netherlandish/Dutch school of cartography in its golden age (the 16th and 17th centuries). This map shows great detail of all the towns and cities in Lorraine. Major forests, mountains and rivers are shown with larger cities highlighted by church steeples. Description of the area in Old German on the reverse. Signed in the lower right corner – Amsterdami Apud Guiljesmum Blaeuw. Map page size is about 18 ” by 22 “, large margin for framing.
