1641 Johannes Blaeu map of the Duchy of Valois in France. Valois is located northeast of Paris and the map shows the area between Senlis, Compiègne, Soissons and Meaux, the region is presently included in the modern day department of Seine-et-Marne. The region is known for fine wines, including Champagne, which partially overlaps ancient Valois. Three corners of this map are decorated with decorative cartouche work embellished with hand coloring: an ornamental armorial crest, a baroque mile scale, and a beautiful title cartouche illustrating spear wielding hunters each holding a pair of hunting dogs, one holding a falcon. Dutch text on verso. Original plate mark visible. Paper age-toned with scattered mild foxing. Good and dark impression. The right margin contains a number of small tears and one larger one that stops a good 5/8 inch away from the plate mark, once matted this would never be seen. 15 3/8 x 19 3/4 inches / 390 x 500 mm.
