A Map of the Austrain Possessions in the Nether Lands or Low Countries, with principalities of Liege and Stavelo, &c. Reduced from the Trigonometric Survey made by order of HRH The Prince Charles of Lorraine. A splendid map showing the complicated situation in the Low Countries at the end of the 18th century. The Habsburg Empire is much in evidence in the area, with both larger Duchies Brabant, Luxemburg, etc. And also tiny regions, relating to these larger Duchies. Each area and possession has been handcoloured systematically so one can see which larger area the smaller ones belong to. A description along the bottom may or may not! Make it all clearer still. The map has the imprint at the bottom London: Published by William Faden, Geographer to His Majesty. Faden was one of the most important map publishers at the end of the 18th century. He published the first Ordnance Survey map, that of Kent, in 1801. This is an important and scarce European map. Size: 77cms x 58cms. Condition: Generally the map is in a good condition with fine original handcolouring. There is a slight stain at the top of the centrefold. The platemark at the bottom was showing signs of weakness, and it has now been neatly strengthened using japanese tissue, The repair is virtually invisible.
