Desnos’s Hand-Colored Map -1762- HISTORY OF MACEDONIA. It was published in Paris by Desnos & Chez Auteur in 1762. This hand-colored map is in good condition with minor age toning. The size of the map is about 10″ x 11″ on a page that is about 22″ x 15 1/2″ (blank on back with usual center-fold). It contains a central image and has flanking columns of text and elaborate borders framing all. The decorative border frame has garlands of leaves and flowers including surveyor’s and draughtman’s tools and a figurehead in top center. Interestingly, the map was printed into the printed cartouche frame that had been produced in a separate operation. The hand coloring is from the date of publication. It is on good thick paper. This map is from a important atlas in the history of map-making. Paris was the center of much of the significant map-making of the 18th century. Desnos was one of France’s most important map makers of that period. He was also geographer to the King of Denmark. This map is rare. Maps from this atlas is presented in many of the most important museums of the world. For example 17 maps are presented in England’s National Maritime museum.
