Description: Old woodcut of Eger Bohemia (Cheb-Czech Republic) on the river Ohre, showing the town with fortifications, churches and castles. The map is a more than 400 years old woodblock print, hand colored from Sebastian Munsters Cosmographia, one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. Sebastian Munster was a German writer, historicus, mapmaker, cartographer, cosmographer born in Ingelheim Germany. Münster completed his studies at the Universität Tübingen in 1518 led by Johannes Stöffler. Munster published two books, an edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia, in 1540, with 48 double-page woodcut maps, and his Cosmographia, published in 1544, which contained upwards of five hundred woodcuts, including 24 double-page maps. 40.5 x 31.5 cm. 16 x 12.5 inches.
