Title of the map. “L’ALSACE divisée en HAUTE et BASSE et LE SUNDGAU, par le Sr ROBERT, Géographe ordinaire du Roi Avec Privilege 1754″. Large antique copper engraved map of Alsace in eastern France, divided in two parts. A large nice decorative cartouche in colors engraved by Haussard. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy published “The Atlas Universel”, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondy’s integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer of the king Louis XV. Gilles often signed maps as “Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as “Robert de Vaugondy”, or added “fils” or “filio after his name. Size with margins : 80 x 55 cm / 31,4 x 21,6 inch. Image measures 19 x 27.25 inches, sheet measures 21.5 x 31.5 inches. Shows some light staining along original center fold, otherwise in very good condition. Beautifully designed map showing the Alsace region in northwestern France divided into two parts; the left shows the Bas-Rhin, the right shows Haute-Rhin. The area is famous for grapes and wine including Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Crémant-Alsace. His “Atlas Universel” was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information.
