Antique Map-FRANCE-GRAVELINES-FORTRESS-Blaeu-1650

Original Antique Maps and Prints. Description: Published in Amsterdam by J. Artists and Engravers: Joan Blaeu (23 September 1596 – 28 May 1673) was a Dutch cartographer. He was born in Alkmaar, the son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1620 he became a doctor of law but he joined the work of his father. In 1635 they published the Atlas Novus (full title: Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus) in two volumes. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638. Joan became the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company. Around 1649 Joan Blaeu published a collection of Dutch city maps named Tooneel der Steeden (Views of Cities). In 1651 he was voted into the Amsterdam council. In 1654 Joan published the first atlas of Scotland, devised by Timothy Pont. In 1662 he reissued the atlas with 11 volumes, and one for oceans. It was also known as Atlas Maior. A cosmology was planned as their next project, but a fire destroyed the studio completely in 1672. Joan Blaeu died in Amsterdam the following year. Subject: Plate :’Gravelinga Gallis Gravelines Dicta’. Copper engraved town view and groundplan from Blaeu’s townbook of the southern Netherlands, first published in 1649. Blaeu composed his townbooks towards the end of the conflict with Spain and consequently the atlas became linked with the Dutch struggle for independence, proudly showing cities and stategic places. Gravelines was situated in the southern, Spanish, Netherlands and it was since long clear that it would not be reconquerred by the rebelious north, especially because such a reunion would not be supported by the majority of the southern population. Aubusson France Cassini 1774 Feuille 66 N°13 Large Antique Map On Linen

Large antique map number 13, Feuille 66, of the region of Aubusson, Pont Charraux and Sauvagnac, Puy de Dome, France, on linen, 18th century, c. The Cassini maps are the first topographic and geometric maps made of the Kingdom of France as a whole. It was compiled by the Cassini family, mainly César-François Cassini (Cassini III) and his son Jean-Dominique Cassini (Cassini IV) in the 1700s. The map was, for the time, a real innovation and a decisive technical advance. It is the first map to be based on a geodesic triangulation. Four generations of the Cassini carried out the work, taking more than 6 decades to complete. The map does not precisely locate dwellings or the boundaries of swamps and forests, but the level of precision of the road network represented is such that by superimposing satellite photos onto map sheets of France, spectacular results are obtained. This gigantic map of France is composed of 180 sheets engraved on copper, on a scale of one percent toises, or a scale of 1/86 400 (one toise is 864 lines). Extremely precise, the map of Cassini is a veritable treasure trove of information on the geography of 18th century France. Everything is noted: the different kinds of roads, towns, castles, villages, so-called leagues, abbeys, farms, calvaries, parishes, mills, reefs, streams, ponds, marshes, woods… Size with margins : 90 x 60 cm / 35,4 x 23,5 inches. Condition : good condition, on linen. 1774, Paris, 18th century. WE DON’T SELL LASER AND COPIES MAPS, ALL WE SELL IS ORIGINAL AND ANTIQUE.
