Circa 1710 John Senex antique map, ” New Map of the Provinces of Hainault, Namur & Cambray”. This early 1700s antique map depicts the border region between Belgium & France. Featured on this beautifully engraved original antique map – a wonderful title cartouche. Cities, forests, rivers, streams, many small towns, fortified structures & more – as manifest and evidenced by the tremendous details and presence! Only minor condition issues worth mentioning: wear commensurate with age, some small repaired margin tears, a margin chip & fortified seam at top & bottom of centerfold – exactly as pictured! Also worth mentioning, all borders & margins are present but in some areas missing from the main picture due to my scanner’s size limitation (25″ x 18.5″ max). I have taken a couple pictures of the map in it’s entirety with my camera to show the margin + border (last two pics). Dimensions of map (including margins). Please feel free to message me with any questions you might have regarding this fine antique map! This item is in the category “Antiques\Maps, Atlases & Globes\Europe Maps”. This set of 6 antique, framed, engraved and hand-colored maps shows 6 different regions/areas in France. Each of these engraved, antique maps has illustrations surrounding the centered map that show scenes of the most important features of that area in the 1850s. The maps themselves are in excellent antique condition with no visible flaws. Being framed behind glass for the last 50-70 years has preserved them. Each map had hand water-coloring applied a long time ago. A few of the colors are still quite vibrant, while most have aged into warm, muted tones. Please see all photos. These maps, without folds, are from the large format edition of the Atlas National Illustre de France, by Victor Levasseur, published in Paris in 1852. Each map image measures approximately 11 by 17 inches and each framed map measures 15.5 by 20.75 inches. The six maps are as follows. De Lot et Garonne. Venable’s Fine Arts, 1615 Conn Ave. Was a renowned DC gallery for many decades. The gallery, which also did framing and restoration work, was founded by Samuel J. Venable in 1892 in downtown Washington. At its height during Venable’s tenure, the business employed 13 framers. It moved to 1615 Connecticut Ave. NW at the end of World War II and occupied various premises along that avenue until it closed at the end of 1997. Two of the maps have ink stamps from another framer in nearby Alexandria, Virginia, that is no longer in business. One of those frames has been reinforced around the back of the frame with tape, as has one of the Venable frames. A couple of the frames have small scratches on the gold painted wood where the frames were stacked without padding between them. Each framed map weighs about 3 lbs. I pack very well… However, using free local pick-up will save you a lot. Every vintage and antique item has a story to tell. Small, as-made anomalies speak to the uniqueness of each piece. And nothing ages without time showing its mark in some way. A century of being used or held and admired, packed and moved, cleaned and displayed, will create the telltale signs of genuine age. I personally take packages to the nearest U. Post office at Ladysmith, Virginia. That is also where I conduct FREE in-person pick-up for any item. Please contact me if you have any questions. It is located in the country\’s east-central part at the confluence of the rivers Rhône and Saône. Fernand Braudel remarked, Historians of Lyon are not sufficiently aware of the bi-polarity between Paris and Lyon, which is a constant structure in French development… From the late Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution. In the late 15th century, the fairs introduced by Italian merchants made Lyon the economic counting house of France. Even the Bourse (treasury), built in 1749, resembled a public bazaar where accounts were settled in the open air. When international banking moved to Genoa, then Amsterdam, Lyon remained the banking centre of France. During the Renaissance, the cities development was driven by the silk trade, which strengthened its ties to Italy. Italian influence on Lyons architecture is still visible among historic buildings. In the later 1400s and 1500s Lyon was also a key centre of literary activity and book publishing, both of French writers (such as Maurice Scève, Antoine Heroet, and Louise Labé) and of Italians in exile (such as Luigi Alamanni and Gian Giorgio Trissino). In 1572, Lyon was a scene of mass violence by Catholics against Protestant Huguenots in the St. Bartholomew\’s Day Massacre. Two centuries later, Lyon was again convulsed by violence when, during the French Revolution, the citizenry rose up against the National Convention and supported the Girondins. The city was besieged by Revolutionary armies for over two months before surrendering in October 1793. Many buildings were destroyed, especially around the Place Bellecour, while Jean-Marie Collot d\’Herbois and Joseph Fouché administered the execution of more than 2,000 people. The Convention ordered that its name be changed to Liberated City and a plaque was erected that proclaimed Lyons made war on Liberty; Lyons no longer exists. A decade later, Napoleon ordered the reconstruction of all the buildings demolished during this period. After the National Convention faded into history, the French Directory appeared and days after the September 4, 1797, Coup of 18 Fructidor, a Directory\’s commissioner was assassinated in Lyon. The city became an important industrial town during the 19th century. In 1831 and 1834, the canuts (silk workers) of Lyon staged two major uprisings for better working conditions and pay. In 1862, the first of Lyon\’s extensive network of funicular railways began operation. In 1612 he married the daughter of the cartographer and publisher Jodocus Hondius, and then set up in business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. In 1616 he published his first maps of France and Italy and from then onwards he produced a very large number of maps, perhaps not quite rivaling those of the Blaeu family but running a very close second in quantity and quality. From about 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, issuing further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlases to which his name was added. On the death of Henricus he took over the business, expanding the atlas still further, until eventually he published an 11-volume Atlas Major on a scale similar to Blaeu\\\’s Atlas Major. The first full edition of Jansson\\\’s English County Maps was published in 1646 but some years earlier he issued a number of British maps in the Mercator/Hondius/Jansson series of atlases (1636-44); the maps were printed from newly engraved plates and are different from the later 1646 issue and are now rarely seen (see Appendix B for further details). In general appearance Jansson\\\’s maps are very similar to those of Blaeu and, in fact, were often copied from them, but they tend to be more flamboyant and decorative. After Jansson\\\’s death his heirs published a number of maps in an Atlas Contractus in 1666, later still many of the plates of his British maps were acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valck who published them again in 1683 as separate maps. Please note all items auctioned are genuine, we do not sell reproductions. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) can be issued on request. What is an Antique Map. The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers. The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type i. Sea or celestial charts or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land. The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection. Starting a collection & pricing. Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional.
