1771 Large Map FRANCE French Regions BURGUNDY BOURGOGNE LYONNOIS by Bonne (JM). A fine and rare large original antique map titled. Carte des Gouvernements de Bourgogne de Franche Comte et de Lyonnois. A highly detailed and decorative large map by Rigobert Bonne of the French regions of Burgundy and the adjacent regions of Franche-Comte and Lyonnais. Covers the region in full from Champagne to Dauphine and from Auvergne to Savoy – one of the world’s finest wine regions. Overall size of map is 48cm x 35cm with large margins, perfect for mounting & framing CONDITION: Excellent overall condition with hand colouring and the centrefold as issued. 1743 – 1793 was a Paris based bookseller, engraver, and map publisher active in the mid to late 18th century. Lattre published a large corpus of maps, globes, and atlases in conjunction with a number of other important French cartographic figures, including Janvier, Zannoni, Bonne and Delamarche. He is also known to have worked with other European cartographers such as William Faden of London and the Italian cartographer Santini. Paris court records indicate that Lattre brought charges against several other period map publishers, including fellow Frenchman Desnos and the Italian map engraver Zannoni, both of whom he accused of copying his work. Lattre’s offices and bookshop were located at 20 rue St. Cartographers Rigobert Bonne (1727 – 1794) was one of the most important French cartographers of the late 18th century. Bonne was born in Ardennes at Raucourt, France. He taught himself mathematics and by eighteen was a working engineer. In the subsequent years, Bonne became one of the most respected masters of mathematics, physics and geography in Paris. In 1773, Bonne succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the. Depot de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period – most on equal-area projection known erroneously as the’Bonne Projection’. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th century and early 18th century towards a more scientific and practical aeshetic. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is high regards for its details, historical importance and overall aesthetic appeal. Bonne died of edema in 1794, but his son Charles-Marine Rigobert Bonne continued to publish his work well after his father’s death. Jean or Robert Janvier fl. 1746 – 1776 was a Paris based cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Janvier true first name is a matter of debate, as it appears as it often appears as either Jean or Robert. More commonly, Janvier simply signed his maps Signor Janvier. By the late 18th century Janvier seems to have been awarded the title of “Geographe Avec Privilege du Roi” and this designations appears on many of his latter maps. Janvier worked with many of the most prominent French, English and Italian map publishers of his day, including Faden, Lattre, Bonne, Santini, Zannoni, Delamarche, and Desnos. 1736 Simon Map or Plan of Angers, France (19th Century Restrike)

1736 Simon Map or Plan of Angers, France (19th Century Restrike). WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS – NOT REPRODUCTIONS. Title: Nouveau Plan de la Ville d’Angers enrichi de la carte des environs et de la perspective de la ville avec ses principalles maisons. Description: This is an 1882 Lachâ^s®se and Dolbeau restrike of a 1736 Simon map of Angers, France. The restrike was done using the original 7 plates, which were in the archives of the Mairie d’Angers (the Angers City Hall). The map centers on Angers and depicts the Maine River and the fields surrounding the city. The Maine River cuts through Angers, and the city appears to be walled and surrounded by a moat on both sides of the river. Several buildings, both inside and outside Angers, are labeled, including St. Maurice Cathedral (which is depicted in profile), several abbeys and monasteries, and the Hotel de Ville, another term for City Hall. The roads and town squares are labeled, and so is the Champ de Foire (fairground). The fields outside the city are depicted with different patterns and symbols to show the differences in crops. Framing the map are six depictions of buildings in Angers, including Saint Maurice Cathedral, the châ^s¢teau d’Angers, the Hotel de Ville and three abbeys. A map of the environs of Angers occupies the upper left corner and depicts the confluence of the Maine River and the Loire River just outside the city. A view of the city from slightly upriver sits in the upper right corner. At the bottom left corner is a table of the streets of Angers in alphabetical order, so that they can easily be located, and at the bottom right corner is a table of’churches, convents, schools, mansions, palaces, and squares’ also in alphabetical order. Two elaborate cartouches are situated along the upper margin. The one on the right is the title cartouche, and the one of the left bears the dedication by the author, Simon. Along the bottom margin, the scale can also be found in an elaborate cartouche. Today, Angers is known for its location in the Loire River Valley. This valley is famous for its fine wines, which comprises several different wine regions, including Muscadet and Sancerre. The Loire Valley is also famous for its châ^s¢teaux, which are world famous. Some of the châ^s¢teaux are privately-owned, and run as bed and breakfasts or hotels. Others, such as Chambord and Chenonceau, are run as tourist sites and welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors a year This example of this map was published by Lachâ^s®se and Dolbeau in 1882 in Angers, France. The original was drawn by L. Simon and engraved by N. Dheulland in 1736 in Angers. Size: Printed area measures 40 inches high by 48 inches wide. Printed in 7 panels joined by publisher.
