Dated 1764 on the map. The map was published in the Atlas Historique de la France Ancienne et Moderne (Paris: Desnos, 1766), a copy of the original title page is included for authenticity. Size: The map image area between the neat lines measures approximately 10×11 inches (25x28cm) on a 11 1/2 x15 (29x38cm) page. Condition: Very Good to Excellent condition for its age, approximately 10×11 inches (25x28cm) on a 11 1/2 x15 (29x38cm) page, blank on reverse, with original handcoloring and a centerfold as issued. There are slight soft bends on the upper corners not affecting the map area, otherwise it is very clean with beautiful color on a strong flexible cotton page with the copper plate printing marks embossed in the margins. This beautifully hand coloured original copper-plate engraved antique map of the historic regions of Champagne & Brie in northern France, centering on the city of Rheims by Jan Jansson – after Nicolas Sanson – was published in the 1646 Latin edition of Mercators Atlas by Jan Jansson and Henricus Hondius. Background: Champagne is a historical province in the northeast of France, now best known as the Champagne wine region for the sparkling white wine that bears its name. It was founded in 1065 near the city of Provins and was made up of different counties descended from the early medieval kingdom of Austrasia. Brie is a historic region of northern France. It was once divided into three sections ruled by different feudal lords: the western Brie française, corresponding roughly to the modern department of Seine-et-Marne in the Île-de-France region; the eastern Brie champenoise, forming a portion of the modern department of Marne in the historic region of Champagne (part of modern-day Grand Est); and the northern Brie pouilleuse, forming part of the modern department of Aisne in Picardy. In 1612 he married the daughter of the cartographer and publisher Jodocus Hondius, and then set up in business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. In 1616 he published his first maps of France and Italy and from then onwards he produced a very large number of maps, perhaps not quite rivaling those of the Blaeu family but running a very close second in quantity and quality. From about 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, issuing further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlases to which his name was added. On the death of Henricus he took over the business, expanding the atlas still further, until eventually he published an 11-volume Atlas Major on a scale similar to Blaeu\\\’s Atlas Major. The first full edition of Jansson\\\’s English County Maps was published in 1646 but some years earlier he issued a number of British maps in the Mercator/Hondius/Jansson series of atlases (1636-44); the maps were printed from newly engraved plates and are different from the later 1646 issue and are now rarely seen (see Appendix B for further details). In general appearance Jansson\\\’s maps are very similar to those of Blaeu and, in fact, were often copied from them, but they tend to be more flamboyant and decorative. After Jansson\\\’s death his heirs published a number of maps in an Atlas Contractus in 1666, later still many of the plates of his British maps were acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valck who published them again in 1683 as separate maps. The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers. The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type i. Sea or celestial charts or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land. The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection. Starting a collection & pricing. Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on. Cartographical sources: Ferdinand de Lannoy made a map of Burgundy in 1563 for which he obtained a privilege, but which was subsequently suppressed by the Spaniards for political reasons. Abraham Ortelius began his career as a colorist with Christophe Plantin, a printer in Antwerp. He was a cartographer and an humanist. Antwerp is in the sixteenth century one of the largest cities in Europe and a major cultural and artistic center. The printing press is flourishing and the Officinia Plantinia or the Compas d’Or, the publishing house founded by Christophe Plantin, is one of the most important and sells books throughout Europe. With 16 presses and 80 employees, it offers an impressive catalogu. Of various books and maps. Above all, Ortelius forged a reputation as the inventor of the modern atlas: in 1570, he was the first to collect a series of maps of identical format and style, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. He achieved this thanks to his vast knowledge and his numerous contacts with scholars throughout Europe, a few years before his contemporaries Gerard de Jode and Gerard Mercator also published an atlas. 1570, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Ortelius is the first atlas printed in the modern sense of the word; it is published in Latin in Antwerp. The book includes 53 maps, works by different authors, classified from general to particular. On the verso of each map, a text exposes the knwoledge of the represented region. The success was immediate and translations from latin to French, German or Dutch were quickly published. When it was published in 1570, this work was the first to compile all known world maps in the same format. It is a huge success despite its high price it is reputed to be the most expensive book of its. It will know 42 editions in 7 languages until its last posthumous publications in 1612.
