Vintage Map coffee table by Maison Jansen, France, circa 1960 The image is gilded glass. (the map is etched into the backside of the glass top). Verre églomisé map image with mahogany table frame and brass detailing. Title of map: America : with those known parts in that unknowne worlde both people and manner of buildings discribed and inlarged. Very good vintage condition commensurate of age. The term is originally from France where it has become synonymous with gilded glass. Thus verre is glass + an églomisé comes from Glomy, which is the last name of an 18th-century Parisian picture-framer. Verre églomisé is a process in which the back side of glass is gilded with gold or metal leaf. Through a processes, the metal is adhered using a gelatin adhesive, which results in a mirror-like, reflective finish. The metal leaf may be applied using oil-based adhesives to achieve a matte finish. Alternatively, the gilding may be combined with reverse painting on glass. The technique creates rich, shimmering and beautifully reflective pieces of artwork. There are many variants of the technique, most of them are extremely complex and time-consuming, but as always there are ways of simplifying the process. Title of the map. LE ROYAUME DE FRANCE. Mathaeus MERIAN was a Swiss engraver, he worked in Francfort (Germany). He is the father of the painter of flowers and insects Anna Maria Sybilla Merian. Topographiae Germaniae has been edited in 16 volumes, from 1642 to 1654. After the death of Matthaeus Merian, his son Matthaeus Merian le Jeune continued the work of his father, and produced other volumes untill 1688, with other descriptions in Europe, as France “Topographiae Galliae”, Italy, and Creete. In total, Topographiae contains 92 maps and 1486 copper engraving plates with 2142 views of cities, castles, villages, monasters, divided in 30 volumes. The views of Merian are famous with them perspective view. Size with margins : 39 x 31 cm / 15,3 x 12,2 inches. Condition : good condition, left margin expertly extended.
