FRANCE SPAIN c. 1745 BIDASSOA RIVER -SET OF 2 RARE ANTIQUE HISTORICAL PLANS

Title of the plans. “ISLE DE LA CONFERENCE Et de ses Environs Presentée a MONSEIGNEUR DE LA BOVE Par le Sr Loguet Ingenieur”. “EDIFICE ELEVE Sous les Ordres de Mr de la BOVE Intendant de Navarre et Bearn, POUR LA REMISE DE DONA MARIE THEREZE DAUPHINE le 13 Janvier 1745″. This reception took place to celebrate the wedding between Marie-Thérèse d’Espagne and Louis de France. Marie-Thérèse d’Espagne became Dauphine de France on 1745 February 23, to her death on 1746, July 22. The plans have been realised by Loguet, Ingenior, to Gaspard-Henri Caze de LA BOVE, Intendant of Bearn and Navarre from February 1744 to March 1749. The entire length of the land is divided between a French and a Spanish part, which only meet in the conference room where the talks are being held. It itself is in exact proportion included in the areas devolved to the two kingdoms. The event is reflected in engravings that document it to the general public. The negociation of the treaty on the island was integrated into the monarchical gesture and its highlights immortalized: royal entrances, parties, shows, funerals, wedding. One plan represents the route of French to the island of Conference, and the route from St Sebastian to the island. The second one represents in detail the house were the conference took place. This place is an emblematic place. Another famous evenement took place here. François I, prisoner of Charles V since Pavia is exchanged, on March 15, 1526, against his two eldest sons, the dauphin François de France and Henri de France (future Henri II). On either side of the river, boats advance and meet in the middle of the stream where a pontoon was prepared near the island. Then, it was the place where was signed the peace Treaty of the Pyrenees (Traité des Pyénées) between France and Spain on 1659, November 7, at the end of the war between France and Spain, war begun in 1635 as part of the 30-year war (guerre de 30 ans). The development of the Island of the Pheasants (ile des Faisans), which on this occasion obtained its second name «of the island of the conference» (isle de la Conference), makes of the Bidassoa the antechamber where the two kingdoms take language. The discussions that began in Madrid continued on the island for three months, between Mazarin and Mendez de Haro, during 24 meetings, so the agreement was accompanied by the wedding of Louis XIV with Marie-Thérèse of Austria (d’Autriche), daughter of the king of Spain. Louis XIV and Philippe IV met on the island on 5 and 6 June 1660 to confirm the treaty, before the wedding was celebrated at Saint-Jean-de Luz. The representation of this evenement is very rare, we only know one double page print by Perelle. Size of each plate with margins : 35,7 x 25 cm / 13,7 x 9,8 inches. Condition : very good condition, antique colors. WE DON’T SELL LASER AND COPIES MAPS, ALL WE SELL IS ORIGINAL AND ANTIQUE. Due to the age an type of paper, some imperfections are to be expected.
