Original Antique Maps and Prints. Description: This original antique map was published by Covens & Mortier ca. Artists and Engravers: The de L’Isle family was one of the most influential Geographers of the early 18th century in France. Claude de L’Isle, born 1644, had four sons, of which Guillaume was the most notable. Guillaume was born 1675 and became member of the “Academie Royale des Sciences” with the age of twenty-seven, and was honoured later with the title “Premier Geographe du Roi”. His largest project, the “Atlas de Geographie”, was published until 1774 in Paris and Amsterdam (Covens and Mortier). He died in 1726. Pieter and David Mortier were booksellers in Paris and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter’s death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes Covens and established the famous publishing house “Covens and Mortier” in Amsterdam. They have re-issued Atlases of Sanson, de l’Isle, Visscher and de Wit. Subject: Map :’Comitatus Hannoniae Namurcensis et Cameracensis. Carte des Comtez de Hainaut Namur et de Cambresis’. Original Antique Maps and Prints. Description: This decorative print originates from:’Histoire Militaire de Flandre depuis l’Annee 1690. , by le Chevalier de Beaurain, 2nd. This is an important historical source concerning the’Nine Years’ War’ (1688-97). This war is often called the War of the Grand Alliance, the War of the Palatine Succession, or the War of the League of Augsburg – was a major war of the late 17th century fought between King Louis XIV of France, and a European-wide coalition, the Grand Alliance, led by the Anglo-Dutch Stadtholder-King William III, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, King Charles II of Spain, Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, and the major and minor princes of the Holy Roman Empire. He published a 14-volume atlas Atlas de géographie ancienne et moderne. And this work originally published in 1756. His son Jean-Baptiste Jacques de Beaurain (1728-unknown) continued his work on military history and finished some of his works. This plate is engraved by J. Martinet, text by J. 21:’Carte des Camps de Strees et de Felluy les 21 Aout et 4 Septembre 1691′. Map of the encampments of Strees and Feluy on August 21st and Semptember 4th 1691. From 1588 to 1596, his address was on Rue de la Scellerie. The most important work by Maurice Bouguereau was the Atlas Le Theatre Francoys , which he published in Tours in 1594, the first Atlas of France and a milestone in the history of French cartography. Henry IV (15531610) had given him the order for this work, who at that time fought for the unification of his kingdom and wanted to demonstrate his power and greatness with this publication. This was particularly emphasized with a portrait of the king in the atlas, which was shown together with a general map of France; sometimes a sonnet was printed instead of the map under the portrait. Title: A New Map of France Shewing its Principal Divisions Chief Cities, Townes, Ports Rivers, Mountains, etc. Description: This is a lovely 1712 map of France by Edward Wells of Oxford. It covers all of France and parts of Belgium and Switzerland. Notes the principal divisions, cities, towns, rivers, roads and other topographical features. At the opening of the 18th century France was one of the dominant powers in Europe. With a population of nearly 19,000,000 people under a single government and ample arable farmland, France dominated most of Europe socially and economically. A decorative cartouche appears on the bottom left quadrant of the map featuring the coat of arms of the Duke of Gloucester. This, like many other Wells maps, is dedicated to Prince William, Duke of Gloucester and son of Queen Anne, who, when this map was being prepared, was a student at Oxford. Spofforth and published by T. Bonwicke for the 1712 edition of Edward Wells’ Atlas, A New Sett of Maps both of Ancient and Present Geography.
