Antique Map by Willem Blaeu & Son Joan. Of Alsatia (Alsace) (Province in France). Circa 1680s Hand Colored. Frederik de Wit Restrike. Would make a great gift or keep for yourself! This is a beautiful antique map engraving. The map was originally done Willem Blaeu of Amesterdam, around 1645 by his son Joan. When Joan died in the early 1670s, and there was also a fire at the Blaeu business, a F. So, this engraving is in our opinion a circa 1680s restrike of the original engraving. The Kennedy Galleries (one of the oldest art galleries in the United States), noted below, thought the map may have dated to 1663 to 1667. You be the judge before acquiring. This engraving is not some modern reproduction of this map. Old paper and aging to piece consistent with being over 330 years old. Not sure what version of this map this one actually is. Any help with that would be much appreciated. Beautiful hand coloring and details. Lots of blue red, and gold hand colored areas. Great images of angels around the map title at the top and the inset map of the DuPont area in the lower left. There is the number “54″ is written in old brownish ink in the upper right corner. May be the plate number from the Map Atlas the map was originally in. Has something like “Long Com 10″ written in cursive in brown ink in the lower right corner of the engraving. No foxing or brown of the paper. Some very minor spotting in places The map was once folded down the middle. So, the map probably came out of an Atlas. We see no rips, tears or repairs to the engraving. The engraving was professionally mounted in a gold colored wood frame with white and red matting. Frame’s gold finish shows some loss. The backing is intact on the frame to keep dust and dirt off of the engraving. The hanging wire is still in place. Has labels on the back from the Kennedy Galleries of 5th Avenue New York that says the engraving dates to 1663 to 1667. Then another gallery label from The Treasury of America’s Prints in Wykoff, NJ whom probably did the most recent framing and matting of the piece. The Antique Frederik de Wit Map after Willem & Joan Blaeau in frame is 26.25″ tall, by 29-1/8″ across, by. The map showing within the matting is 19.5″ tall by 22-5/8″ across.
