Fromaiges et Vignobles 1963 Derveaux Map Cheese Makers & Wineries in France

58 cm x 46 cm with frame. 49 cm x 37 cm image only. This is a 1963 Daniel-Louis Derveaux map of France, illustrating French wine and cheese producers. The map depicts the region from the English Channel and Belgium and Luxembourg to the Mediterranean Sea and from the Bay of Biscay to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. French cheesemakers are labeled throughout the country, with distinctions made between cheese made with ewe’s milk (blue), goat’s milk (yellow), and cow’s milk (brown). Nearly every region in France specializes in its own cheese, with a few exceptions. French wine making regions, on the other hand, are noted by shading different areas of the map a darker color, almost a brown. Some of these regions are labeled, such as the Muscadet and Coteaux du Lavon regions in western France, the Crus du Jura in western France, the Vignobles du Longuedoc in southern France along the Mediterranean, and, of course, the several different wine regions around Bordeaux. Within these areas, myriad vintners (wine makers) are labeled, allowing for the vintners (and the client) to potentially locate their wineries. Two inset maps along the right border bring two wine regions into even greater focus and detail. The top inset map details the. Grands Vins du Bordelais. Or the Bordeaux wine region and the other regions surrounding it, stretching from St. The second inset map illustrates the. Grand Vins de Bourgogne. Or the Bourgogne wine region. This map stretches from Dijon to Villefranche, tracing a large section of the Saone River. Aside from the numerous cheese makers and vintners labeled throughout France, several comic aspects of this map create an almost jocular air. The surrounding countries are not labeled by their internationally-recognized names i. Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, but by names like. The United Kingdom, for example, is labeled. Païs des Buveurs de Thé. Or’Land of Tea Drinkers’, while Germany is labeled the. Roïaume de la Choucroute. The’Kingdom of Sauerkraut’. Païs des Buveurs de Biere. The Country of Beer Drinkers and Italy is recognized as the. Païs des Mangeurs de Pates. The Country of Pasta Eaters. Framing the map are the aforementioned inset maps of the Bordeaux and Bourgogne wine regions, along with two vignettes. One illustrates what is presumably a festival in any of the smaller towns or villages in France, celebrating wine and cheese. The other is a couple tending to their livestock and working a churn. A decorative title cartouche, in the style of 18th century French cartographers, is situated in the upper left corner. Daniel-Louis Derveaux (August 26, 1914 November 14, 2010) was a French artist active throughout the 20th century. Derveaux was born in Paris, France. By 18 he had already become an excelling artist, mastering drawing, xylography, and copper engraving. His work is varied, but much of his early work, completed in the 1930s, involved French town and country scenes. He took part in World War II between 1936 and 1940, where he produced numerous cartoons and watercolors lampooning the war-time political environment. He began issuing maps with historical themes around 1942. Over the next 30 years he issued more than 50 geographical maps. Stylistically, Derveaux’s maps are a composite of the styles developed by Blaeu and Homann, but are thematic in focus and embrace themes that would have been unusual in early maps. Condition: a scuff mark to top right hand corner border- no marks on actual mark, frame has some scuff marks, we have had the tape replaced on the rear. Hanging with original hanging hard ware still in place. Any questions are welcome. Please be assured that I will professionally wrap the item for confidence in transit. 1859 David Tree Chart Illustrating the History of France

1859 David Tree Chart Illustrating the History of France. WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS – NOT REPRODUCTIONS. Title: 1859 Arbre Historique de La France. Description: A curious and uncommon 1859 infographic chart illustrating the history of France as a giant tree. The chart beings with six proto-Frankish tribes: the Sicambres, Chamaves, Frisons, Angrivariens, Tencteres, and Saliens, which unite for form the Franks in the 4th century. It proceeds through the Merovingian (509 – 751) and Carolingian Empires (800 – 888). Various offshoots represent historical figures and events. They continue to the Capetian, Valois, and Bourbons until the French Revolution (1789 – 1799) and the Founding of the First Republic of France (1792 – 1804). They give rise to Napoleon I (1769 – 1821) and the First French Empire (1804 – 1815), various restorationist monarchies, the Second Republic (1848 – 1851), and ultimately the Second French Empire (1852 – 1970) under Napoleon III (1808 – 1873). The last date on the chart is 1859. L’Empereur NAPOLEON III. Enfin la premiâ®re feuille donne l’origine du Roi, et les trois derniâ®res, le lieu, la date de sa mort et son â¢ge. Each branch designates successively, starting from the trunk of the tree, the various kingdoms and governments since Pharamond, chief of the Franks, up to and including that of His Majesty the Emperor NAPOLEON III. In the same order, each leaf of the branch from the first gives the origin of the King, and the last three, the place, the date of his death and his age. In summary, this important work, which brings together the double advantage of the Chronology and Genealogy, offers, by its synoptic form, an easy and fruitful study, by engraving promptly in the memory a rich canvas of the history of France. Unquestionably for the youth of the schools, its usefulness will be no less appreciated by the most learned, to whom it offers an easy way to quickly retrieve the chronological order of the escaped facts of the memory. To the left and right of the are neo-classical pedestals bearing arms and armor. Publication History and Census. This chart was begun under J. Cheval and updated and revised to 1859 by F. It was lithographed by Godard, Quai des Augustins, Paris. The engraving is the work of Destez, it is not clear who this is, but it is not, as some have suggested the work of Paul Destez (1851 – 1919) who most will note was but 8 when this was issued. The view is uncommon on the market and we have identified only 3 institutional holdings. Size: Printed area measures 40 inches high by 28 inches wide. Some toning and wear on original fold lines. A few old fold spits reinforce and repaired on verso. 1 – 10 days. If your address is a P. Duty varies by country and we cannot predict the amount you will be charged. 21 1/2in x 18in (545mm x 460mm). (A+) Fine Condition. This beautifully hand coloured original copper-plate engraved antique map of the ancient county of Vermandois now located in the Picardy region of northern France, centering on the city of St Quentin by Jan Jansson was published in the 1638 Latin edition of Mercators Atlas by Jan Jansson and Henricus Hondius. Paper thickness and quality: – Heavy and stable Paper color : – off white Age of map color: – Original Colors used: – Yellow, green, blue, pink General color appearance: – Authentic Paper size: – 22in x 18in (560mm x 460mm) Plate size: – 19in x 14 1/2in (480mm x 370mm) Margins: – Min 2in (50mm). Margins: – Light age toning Plate area: – Light age toning Verso: – Light age toning. Background: Vermandois was a French county that appeared in the Merovingian period. Its name derives from that of an ancient tribe, the Viromandui. In the 10th century, it was organised around two castellan domains: St Quentin (Aisne) and Péronne (Somme). In today\’s times, the Vermandois county would fall in the Picardy region of northern France. Pepin I of Vermandois, the earliest of its hereditary counts, was descended in direct male line from the emperor Charlemagne. More famous was his grandson Herbert II (902943), who considerably increased the territorial power of the house of Vermandois, and kept the lawful king of France, the unlucky Charles the Simple, prisoner for six years. Herbert II was son of Herbert I, lord of Péronne and St Quentin, who was killed in 902 by an assassin in the pay of Baldwin II, Count of Flanders. His successors, Albert I, Herbert III, Albert II, Otto and Herbert IV, were not as historically significant. In 1077, the last count of the first house of Vermandois, Herbert IV, received the county of Valois through his wife. His son Eudes (II) the Insane was disinherited by the council of the Barons of France. He was lord of Saint-Simon through his wife, and the county was given to his sister Adela, whose first husband was Hugh the Great, the brother of King Philip I of France. Hugh was one of the leaders of the First Crusade, and died in 1102 at Tarsus in Cilicia. The eldest son of Hugh and Adela was count Raoul I c. 11201152, who married Petronilla of Aquitaine, sister of the queen, Eleanor, and had by her three children: Raoul (Rudolph) II, the Leper (count from 11521167); Isabelle, who possessed from 1167 to 1183 the counties of Vermandois, Valois and Amiens conjointly with her husband, Philip, Count of Flanders; and Eleanor. By the terms of a treaty concluded in 1186 with the king, Philip Augustus, the count of Flanders kept the county of Vermandois until his death, in 1191. At this date, a new arrangement gave Eleanor d. 1213 a life interest in the eastern part of Vermandois, together with the title of countess of St Quentin, and the king entered immediately into possession of Péronne and its dependencies. In 1612 he married the daughter of the cartographer and publisher Jodocus Hondius, and then set up in business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. In 1616 he published his first maps of France and Italy and from then onwards he produced a very large number of maps, perhaps not quite rivaling those of the Blaeu family but running a very close second in quantity and quality. From about 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, issuing further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlases to which his name was added. On the death of Henricus he took over the business, expanding the atlas still further, until eventually he published an 11-volume Atlas Major on a scale similar to Blaeu\\\’s Atlas Major. The first full edition of Jansson\\\’s English County Maps was published in 1646 but some years earlier he issued a number of British maps in the Mercator/Hondius/Jansson series of atlases (1636-44); the maps were printed from newly engraved plates and are different from the later 1646 issue and are now rarely seen (see Appendix B for further details). In general appearance Jansson\\\’s maps are very similar to those of Blaeu and, in fact, were often copied from them, but they tend to be more flamboyant and decorative. After Jansson\\\’s death his heirs published a number of maps in an Atlas Contractus in 1666, later still many of the plates of his British maps were acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valck who published them again in 1683 as separate maps. Please note all items auctioned are genuine, we do not sell reproductions. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) can be issued on request. What is an Antique Map. The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers. The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type i. Sea or celestial charts or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land. The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection. Starting a collection & pricing. Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on.
