FRANCE PICARDIE 1661 MATTHAEUS MERIAN 17e CENTURY LARGE UNUSUAL ENGRAVED MAP

Title of the map. “CARTE GENERALE de Picardie”. With a decorative cartouche. The coast is detailed, from Dieppe to Calais. Matthaeus MERIAN was a Swiss engraver, he worked in Francfort (Germany). He is the father of the painter of flowers and insects Anna Maria Sybilla Merian. Topographiae Germaniae has been edited in 16 volumes, from 1642 to 1654. After the death of Matthaeus Merian, his son Matthaeus Merian le Jeune continued the work of his father, and produced other volumes untill 1688, with other descriptions in Europe, as France “Topographiae Galliae”, Italy, and Creete. In total, Topographiae contains 92 maps and 1486 copper engraving plates with 2142 views of cities, castles, villages, monasters, divided in 30 volumes. 1579 Ortelius Map of Calais, France (Maroilles Cheese Region). WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS – NOT REPRODUCTIONS. Title: Caletensium et Bononiensium Ditionis Accurata Delinatio. Description: This is a rare 1579 Abraham Ortelius map of the French department of Pas-de-Calais. It covers the French and Belgian coastline from Estables to Calais. This area is known for producing Maroilles, a soft cheese made from cow’s milk and with a washed rind. Cartographically based upon a four sheet map issued by Nicholas de Nicolay in 1558, it features a decorative title cartouche in the lower left quadrant. Shows the region in wonderful detail with attention to forests, cities, rivers, villages and other topographical features. Published in Antwerp by A. Ortelius in 1579 for issue in his seminal atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Size: Printed area measures 14 inches high by 10 inches wide. This map was originally part of a larger sheet on which several maps were printed, consequently the map’s printing and plate mark extend off the right hand side of the page. 1 – 10 days. 1809 COURS GASTRONOMIQUE 2nd Ed Fold Out Map ANTIQUE GOURMET FRENCH COOKBOOK

Offered for sale is this very rare French Gourmet Cooking Book titled, COURS GASTRONOMIQUE, ou LES DINERS DE MANANT-VILLE, OUVRAGE ANECDOTIQUE, PHILOSOPHIQUE et LITTERAIRE with an 1809 title page date and stated SECONDE EDITION on the title page also. It is a very rare French Gourmet Cook Book full of recipes from a long time ago! It still has its original fold out French illustrative map in the front although it does have some damage as the pictures show. It was published out of Paris by Imprimerie de Brasseur Aine and measures about 8″ by 5 1/4″ with 364 pages. The overall condition is fair, good considering the 200+ years of age. There is wear on the edges of the leather hardcovers and some insect damage also although the pages are still very good, pliable, and very readable. The pages are still tight but do have some foxing and staining from age. French Cookbooks that are over 200 years old can be a rare find and this would make a great addition to any serious collection. It is printed in French. Thank you for looking! Rare Antique 1907 HUGO d’ALESI’Alps & COTE D’Azure’ FRANCE MAP Travel Poster

This is a great piece. I recently acquired 2 different examples of these rare map travel posters by Hugo d’Alesi. D’Alesi was well known for his European travel posters and many of his different works come to market often. Not only are they original travel posters they are also early maps of the regions. That is one of the things that really appealed to me. This one is a great view of the Cote d’Azur as well as some of the inland areas of France and the Mediteranean Sea. A large poster measuring 42 x 30 inches. Overall in good condition. There is also some minor toning spots the margins as well. Within the image there are a couple minor spots as well as few very small holes within the center area. There are 2 holes along the right margin that are from the original printing – they were used to hold the paper in place for the lithograph stone. Really all in all it is still an excellent example of this scarce map. Laying it on linen would really make this in an excellent example of this scarce map travel poster.
