Title: Vue de la Porte de la Treille de l’Incendie de la Foire St. Germain a Paris arrive la nuit du 16 au 17 Mars 1762. Description: This dramatic view of the fire at the Saint Germain Fair in Paris, France was published by Jacques Chereau in 1762. The view depicts the fairgrounds ablaze in the background while townsfolk attempt to douse the raging flames using buckets and primitive water pumps. The Saint Sulpice Church can be seen in the top left. A key along the bottom lists the various locations marked in the view. The fire raged for two days, March 16 âÃì 17 1762, and destroyed the Foire Saint-Germain. It would later be reconstructed in 1763. Part of the former fairgrounds are now occupied by the covered Saint-Germain market. The view appears to be an artistâÃôs proof, as the engraving and the title are flipped horizontally. Once flipped back, the title on top would read correctly and the Saint Sulpice Church would appear in the right position. This view was published in Paris by Jacques Chereau. Up for sale is a great, COLORED, ANTIQUE – BRITISH MISSION – folding map, titled “FRANCE – VANNES”. First (PROOF) Edition June 1944. Photolithographed and Printed by O. Compiled by 660th Engrs. Army, 1944 from aerial photographs utilizing Multiplex aero-projectors and control provided by existing French triangulation. Photography by USAAF & RAF, 1943 – 1944. It is blank on the reverse side. It is a very detailed map, measuring. Approximately 24 x 19 1/2 inches, including the border area. Several folds within the map. Maps this early and showing this much detail are a great piece of history! The map has very nice coloring to it. Map is generally in Good- condition. There is some light age related browning and toning to the map. The map has some nicks and chips around the edges. There are several colored stains on the map. Creases in the corners. Mercator, a Dutch cartographer and geographer, was the most famous geographer of the 16th century, and is still celebrated for the Mercator Projection map type, and for his 1595 Atlas of Europe, published in the year of his death, which basically invented the atlas. Note that this copy does have condition issues – the blue and green inks used in the coloration seem to have oxidized and created some brown adjacent spotting. There are also two moisture spots on the back of the map that have impacted the front side of the map – in the center, and center-right near the edge – see photos. Also staining in the margin area in spots around the whole of the map. Rare in any condition, though, and still nice visual appeal, with good color and nice accents including the sea monster above the cartouche, the ships in the English Channel, and the southern tip of England at the top.
