1771 Antique Map of FRANCE Regions LORRAINE & ALSACE Champagne Souabe

1771 Antique Map of FRANCE Regions LORRAINE & ALSACE Champagne Souabe. A fine and rare original antique map titled. Carte des Gouvernment de Lorraine et D’Alsace. ATLAS MODERNE OU COLLECTION DE CARTES SUR TOUTES LES PARTIES DU GLBE TERRESTRE c1775. This is a beautiful example of Rigobert Bonne’s 1771 decorative map of the French winemaking regions of Alsace and Lorraine. Covers from Champagne east to Souabe, north to Luxembourg, and south to Switzerland. This region, which traded hands several times between France and Germany, is known for its exceptional cuisine, wines, and unique culture. Alsace is known for its fine white wines and along with Austria and Germany, this region produces the world’s most desirable dry Rieslings. This mountainous area of the Alsace wine region and is known for its production of both Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The region surrounding Strasbourg on the west bank of the Rhine River is known for producing Munster cheese. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the lower right quadrant. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the HYDROGRAPHER AT THE DEPOT DE LA MARINE. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal. Bonne would later become the Geographer to the King of France. 1743 – 1793 was a Paris based bookseller, engraver, and map publisher active in the mid to late 18th century. Lattre published a large corpus of maps, globes, and atlases in conjunction with a number of other important French cartographic figures, including Janvier, Zannoni, Bonne and Delamarche. He is also known to have worked with other European cartographers such as William Faden of London and the Italian cartographer Santini. Paris court records indicate that Lattre brought charges against several other period map publishers, including fellow Frenchman Desnos and the Italian map engraver Zannoni, both of whom he accused of copying his work. Lattre’s offices and bookshop were located at 20 rue St. Overall size of the map is 51cm x 39cm with large margins, perfect for mounting & framing CONDITION: Excellent overall condition with contemporary hand colouring and the usual centrefold, as issued. As would be expected with antique maps of nearly 250 years old, there will be some slight ageing and toning, but once mounted and framed, will not be noticable. Gallia Vetus ORTELIUS original map of Ancient FRANCE De Bello Gallico Cesar

Gallia Vetus, Ad Iulij Caesaris commentaria. Fine and early historical. Nice Ortelius’ map of Ancient France based on Caesar’s De Bello Gallico. It is engraved to show the mountains, rivers and forests with only a few ancient place names. The names of famous people and tribes of Gallia, as described by Caesar, are listed at sides. Embellished map with tiny ships sailing in the seas and three strapwork cartouches containing the title, scale and dedication, all surrounded in an elaborately engraved border. From the rare 1624 edition of Ortelius’s Parergon in quo Veteris Geographiae aliquot tabulae… Nomenclator Ptolemaicus with the text by Balthasar Moretus. Orteliuss Parergon began as a companion to his Theatrum but eventually it became an independent work. In fact, this collection of maps of the ancient world was so significant that it became the model for all historical atlases published throughout the seventeenth century. The maps and plates in the Parergon have to be evaluated as the most outstanding engravings. Depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century (Koeman). Unlike the Theatrum, which consisted of existing maps reengraved by Ortelius, the maps in the Parergon were drawn by Ortelius himself. As a scholar of antiquity, a dealer in antiques, and a visitor to ancient sites, he was well prepared to execute the maps and all the maps from the Parergon reflect his passion for the ancient world. From: Theatri Orbis Terrarum Parergon; Sive Veteris Geographiae Tabulae, Commentarijs Geographicis et Historicis illustratae… Size: Printed area measures 36 x 46 cm on sheet 46 x 56 cm. Condition: Strong dark impression. Light traces of age on verso and some little spots. WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS – NOT REPRODUCTIONS. 1787 Antique Map Vaugondy / Delamarche Map of the Duchy of Savoy, France

On offer: an original i. Not a later reproduction map Duche de Savoye qui comprend le Chablais, le Fossigny, le Genevois, la Savoye Propre, la Tarentaise et la Maurienne; dresse d’apres la Grande Carte de Piemont de Tomaso Borgomo i. The map covers from Vevey in Switzerland south to Valloire, France and from Nantua east as far as Chatillon in the Aosta Valley of Italy. The map has early outline colour. Delamarche took over production in 1786 and added his name in the cartouche (as here) and final issues were in 1788. SIZE : The printed area is approximately 20 x 21 inches (50.8 x 53.34 cm) with a centre fold as issued. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER : Drawn by Robert de Vaugondy. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (16881766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy c. 17231786, were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV. PROVENANCE: The map was published in “Atlas Universel”. TYPE : Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO : There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. Virtually all antiquarian maps and prints are subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. Minor re-enforcement to bottom of centre fold without loss. Mild crease where once poorly folded. AUTHENTICITY : This is an authentic antique print, published at the date stated above. I do not offer reproductions. It is not a modern copy. The term’original’ when applied to a print means that it was printed at the first or original date of publication; it does not imply that the item is unique. BACKGROUND INFORMATION : The Atlas Universel was the crowning glory of the Robert de Vaugondy firm’s atlas production. The atlas was issued in multiple editions between 1757 and 1788. Later editions, including this example, issued after 1786, were taken over by Charles Delamarche, who inherited the Robert de Vaugondy firm and assumed Boudet’s publication rights.
