1771 Antique Map of FRANCE Regions LORRAINE & ALSACE Champagne Souabe

1771 Antique Map of FRANCE Regions LORRAINE & ALSACE Champagne Souabe. A fine and rare original antique map titled. Carte des Gouvernment de Lorraine et D’Alsace. ATLAS MODERNE OU COLLECTION DE CARTES SUR TOUTES LES PARTIES DU GLBE TERRESTRE c1775. This is a beautiful example of Rigobert Bonne’s 1771 decorative map of the French winemaking regions of Alsace and Lorraine. Covers from Champagne east to Souabe, north to Luxembourg, and south to Switzerland. This region, which traded hands several times between France and Germany, is known for its exceptional cuisine, wines, and unique culture. Alsace is known for its fine white wines and along with Austria and Germany, this region produces the world’s most desirable dry Rieslings. This mountainous area of the Alsace wine region and is known for its production of both Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The region surrounding Strasbourg on the west bank of the Rhine River is known for producing Munster cheese. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the lower right quadrant. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the HYDROGRAPHER AT THE DEPOT DE LA MARINE. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal. Bonne would later become the Geographer to the King of France. 1743 – 1793 was a Paris based bookseller, engraver, and map publisher active in the mid to late 18th century. Lattre published a large corpus of maps, globes, and atlases in conjunction with a number of other important French cartographic figures, including Janvier, Zannoni, Bonne and Delamarche. He is also known to have worked with other European cartographers such as William Faden of London and the Italian cartographer Santini. Paris court records indicate that Lattre brought charges against several other period map publishers, including fellow Frenchman Desnos and the Italian map engraver Zannoni, both of whom he accused of copying his work. Lattre’s offices and bookshop were located at 20 rue St. Overall size of the map is 51cm x 39cm with large margins, perfect for mounting & framing CONDITION: Excellent overall condition with contemporary hand colouring and the usual centrefold, as issued. As would be expected with antique maps of nearly 250 years old, there will be some slight ageing and toning, but once mounted and framed, will not be noticable. 1638 Mercator Hondius Old, Antique Map The Lorraine Region, France Moselle, Meuse

1638 Mercator Hondius Old, Antique Map The Lorraine Region, France Moselle, Meuse

Company Details – About ME. Lorraine Vers Le Midy. This beautifully hand coloured original antique map of the South Lorraine region of France – centering on the Moselle River with the city of Nancy to the north. To the south & the Meuse River to the west – by Gerard Mercator was published by Joducus Hondius in the 1638 edition of Mercators Atlas. (1563 – 1612), one of the most notable engravers of his time, is known for his work in association with many of the cartographers and publishers prominent at the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century. In 1604 Hondius bought the plates of Mercator’s Atlas which, in spite of its excellence, had not competed successfully with the continuing demand of Abraham Ortelius’s. To meet this competition Hondius added about 40 maps to Mercator’s original number and from 1606 published enlarged editions in many languages, still under Mercator’s name but with his own name as publisher. These atlases have become known as the Mercator/Hondius series. The following year the maps were re-engraved in miniature form and issued as a pocket. After the death of Jodocus Hondius the Elder in 1612, work on the two atlases, folio and miniature, was carried on by his widow and sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, and eventually in conjunction with Jan Jansson in Amsterdam. In all, from 1606 onwards, nearly 50 editions with increasing numbers of maps with texts in the main European languages were printed. (Ref: Koeman; M&B; Tooley). Please note all items auctioned are genuine, we do not sell reproductions. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) can be issued on request. This is an authentic antique map, published at the date stated above. It is not a modern copy. The term’original’ when applied means that it was printed at the date of publication. Map or Print’ means any image created by applying an inked block to paper under pressure using a printing press, by hand. Gerard Mercator (Kremer) 1512-94. For nearly sixty years, during the most important and exciting period in the story of modern map making, Gerard Mercator was the supreme cartographer, his name, second only to Ptolemy, synonymous with the form of map projection still in use today. Although not the inventor of this type of projection he was the first to apply it to navigational charts in such a form that compass bearings could be plotted on charts in straight lines, thereby providing seamen with a solution to an age-old problem of navigation at sea. His influence transformed land surveying and his researches and calculations led him to break away from Ptolemy’s conception of the size and outline of the Continents, drastically reducing the longitudinal length of Europe and Asia and altering the shape of the Old World as visualized in the early sixteenth century. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. He established himself there as a cartographer and instrument and globe maker, and when he was twenty-five drew and engraved his first map (of Palestine) and went on to produce a map of Flanders (1540) supervising the surveying and completing the drafting and engraving himself. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V for whom he constructed a globe, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran Protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without serious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments culminating in large-scale maps of Europe (1554), the British Isles (1564) and the famous World Map on 18 sheets drawn to his new projection (1569). All these early maps are exceedingly rare, some being known by only one copy. In later life he devoted himself to his edition of the maps in Ptolemy’s Geographia, reproduced in his own engraving as nearly as possible in their original form, and to the preparation of his 3-volume collection of maps to which, for the first time, the word’Atlas’ was applied. The word was chosen, he wrote,’to honor the Titan, Atlas, King of Mauritania, a learned philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer’. The first two parts of the Atlas were published in 1585 and 1589 and the third, with the first two making a complete edition, in 1595 the year after Mercator’s death. Mercator’s sons and grandsons were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to the great atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. After a second complete edition in 1602, the map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years. 1736 Simon Map or Plan of Angers, France (19th Century Restrike)

1736 Simon Map or Plan of Angers, France (19th Century Restrike). WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS – NOT REPRODUCTIONS JOIN OUR WEEKLY MAILING LIST FOR NEWEST STOCK. Title: Nouveau Plan de la Ville d’Angers enrichi de la carte des environs et de la perspective de la ville avec ses principalles maisons. Description: This is an 1882 Lachâ®se and Dolbeau restrike of a 1736 Simon map of Angers, France. The restrike was done using the original 7 plates, which were in the archives of the Mairie d’Angers (the Angers City Hall). The map centers on Angers and depicts the Maine River and the fields surrounding the city. The Maine River cuts through Angers, and the city appears to be walled and surrounded by a moat on both sides of the river. Several buildings, both inside and outside Angers, are labeled, including St. Maurice Cathedral (which is depicted in profile), several abbeys and monasteries, and the Hotel de Ville , another term for City Hall. The roads and town squares are labeled, and so is the Champ de Foire (fairground). The fields outside the city are depicted with different patterns and symbols to show the differences in crops. Framing the map are six depictions of buildings in Angers, including Saint Maurice Cathedral, the châ¢teau d’Angers , the Hotel de Ville and three abbeys. A map of the environs of Angers occupies the upper left corner and depicts the confluence of the Maine River and the Loire River just outside the city. A view of the city from slightly upriver sits in the upper right corner. At the bottom left corner is a table of the streets of Angers in alphabetical order, so that they can easily be located, and at the bottom right corner is a table of’churches, convents, schools, mansions, palaces, and squares’ also in alphabetical order. Two elaborate cartouches are situated along the upper margin. The one on the right is the title cartouche, and the one of the left bears the dedication by the author, Simon. Along the bottom margin, the scale can also be found in an elaborate cartouche. Today, Angers is known for its location in the Loire River Valley. This valley is famous for its fine wines, which comprises several different wine regions, including Muscadet and Sancerre. The Loire Valley is also famous for its châ¢teaux, which are world famous. Some of the châ¢teaux are privately-owned, and run as bed and breakfasts or hotels. Others, such as Chambord and Chenonceau, are run as tourist sites and welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors a year This example of this map was published by Lachâ®se and Dolbeau in 1882 in Angers, France. The original was drawn by L. Simon and engraved by N. Dheulland in 1736 in Angers. Size: Printed area measures 40 inches high by 48 inches wide. Printed in 7 panels joined by publisher.
