1581, XL-BRAUN+HOGENBERG, MAP, ORLEANS[AURELIA], LOIRE, FRANCE, FRANKREICH, FRANCIA. LOT OF 1 X-LARGE COPPERENGR. BIRDS-EYE VIEW/MAP OF’AURELIA FRANCIAE… , BY BRAUN+HOGENBERG, COLOGNE COMMENTARY BY BRAUN: The Loire, an exceedingly well-known river in France, flows directly past the city and is very beneficial for trade. The fields surrounding the city are very fertile, and for this reason the city is also called the granary throughout France, just as in earlier times Sicily was the granary of Rome. A famous wine also grows in this soil, which is exported from here not only throughout France but to all the countries in Europe. The French spoken here is pure and uncorrupted, which is also the reason why so many foreigners settle here. For some are here for trade, others for study and others again to acquire the language, but also many without doubt for both these last two reasons, … And Germans in particular send their children here. As a complement to the first plate, Orléans is shown here in an extraordinarily precise bird’s-eye perspective that incorporates elevations of the city’s many churches and monasteries, including the cathedral of Sainte-Croix, destroyed by the Huguenots a few years earlier. 51 X 39 CMS, , WITH GOOD MARGINS , SOME WATERSTAINS IN MARGINS ONLY, NO SIGNIFICANT FOXING , NATURAL BROWNING OF PAPER BY AGE, NO SIGNIFICANT SOILING. Senex, John 1690- 1740 A large, attractive map of France incorporating many corrections in the coastal configurations of Cornwall (England), France and Italy. This map is unusual in that it shows the erroneous outlines of earlier cartographers and labels the mistakes Monsr. Sanson and the Dutch Maps, which shadow the corrected coasts. The cartouche provides a portrait of Louis XIV with an armored swordsman to the left and Athena to his right symbolizing the numerous wars of his long reign, but indicating as well the indelible effect he had on the geography and character of France. What is an Antique Map. The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers. The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type i. Sea or celestial charts or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land. The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection. Starting a collection & pricing. Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on. As specialised dealers, we frequently work with first time map buyers who are just starting their collection. So please do not hesitate to and we will be happy to help with any questions you may have. 1844 Girard City Map or Plan of Paris, France

1844 Girard City Map or Plan of Paris, France. WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS – NOT REPRODUCTIONS JOIN OUR WEEKLY MAILING LIST FOR NEWEST STOCK. Description: This is an 1844 Xavier Girard city map or plan of Paris, France. The map depicts the city from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Nation (labeled here as the Place du TrâÂ¥ne) and from the village of Montmartre to the Place d’Italie. Incredibly detailed, nearly every street in the city is labeled, along with innumerable buildings and monuments. Paris in 1844, although resembling the Paris of today, bore some striking differences. The’Haussmannization’ of Paris would not begin for nearly another decade, meaning that the warren of small streets that were an integral part of 17th, 18th, and early 19th century Paris still existed. In 1844, the Palais des Tuileries still stood, blocking public access to the Palais du Louvre. The Jardin des Plantes is referred to here as the Jardin du Roi (King’s Garden), since it was, then, the property of the restored French monarchy. Each of the arrondissements is labeled with Roman numerals and outlined in a different color. A street index is included along both the left and right borders, with two supplemental indexes along the bottom border. This is an extremely rare city map of Paris. We were unable to locate any examples of the 1844 edition in any institutional collections. This map was produced by Xavier Girard and published by J. Size: Printed area measures 23.5 inches high by 39.25 inches wide. Backed on very fragile linen. Linen reinforced in certain places. 1 – 10 days. If your address is a P.
