Antique Map France

This is a fantastic vintage hanging school map of France published by Freytag and Berndt of Germany. German map makers were famous for their precision and detail. This map does not disappoint and shows the physical features of France and surrounding areas. It measures 68 inches high by 58 inches wide, wooden rods included. It is shown hanging on a single nail and would look great above your couch. There is no date shown on the map but I believe it to be pre 1950 as are some of my other maps by the same publisher. The map is in German. It was used in the geography department at the University of Kansas. See photos for details. Title: Insula Corsica, Olin Regni Titulo Insignis nunc Genuensis Reipublicae potestati sujecta, juxta reventissimam designationem. Description: This is a 1742 Covens and Mortier map of Corsica, France. The map depicts the entirety of the island in fantastic detail, labeling cities, towns, and villages, as well as rivers and mountain ranges. Several major cities are illustrated, including Bastia, Saint Florence, Rosoli, and Porto Vecchio. The citadel at Bonifacio is also depicted at the extreme southern end of the island. A decorative title cartouche is situated in the upper left corner, with an explanatory Latin text located in a cartouche in the upper right corner. In the lower left corner, the coat of arms of the short-lived Kingdom of Corsica is illustrated, supported by two herculean-like warriors. The Kingdom of Corsica was founded in 1736 after the island crowned the German adventurer Theodor Stephen Freiherr von Neuhoff the King of Corsica. While in Genoa, Neuhoff met several Corsican rebels and exiles, and succeeded in persuading them that he could free Corsica from Genoese tyranny if they made him king. He landed in Corsica in March 1736 and he was duly elected and crowned king. Upon assuming the throne, Neuhoff became King Theodore I, and he issued edicts, instituted a knighthood, and waged war on the Genoese. At first, he was successful in this campaign, but in-fighting among the rebels led to their defeat. The Genoese put a price on his head and Neuhoff left Corsica in November 1736, ostensibly to seek foreign assistance. After not securing a guarantee of protection from Spain or Naples, he left for Holland where he was arrested for debt in Amsterdam. Neuhoff was again arrested for debt in London in 1755, and only regained his freedom by declaring bankruptcy. He subsisted on the charity of his friends until his death the following year. Abraham Ortelius’ map of ancient Gaul in original hand color, published by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, Amsterdam, 1635. The map is titled Gallia Vetus, Ad iul Caesaris Commentaria, ex conatibus geographicis Abrah Ortelii. In a decorative cartouche. Ortelius’ depiction of ancient France is based on information from Caesar’s De Bello Gallico, which begins with the frequently quoted phrase “Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres”, meaning “Gaul is a whole divided into three parts, ” inhabited by the Belgae, the Aquitani, and the Celts. This map labels Gaul’s three parts, as well as the Roman province on the north shore of the Mediterranean, and shows mountains, rivers and forests, with only a few ancient place names, including Parisi (Paris). The names of famous people and tribes of Gallia, as described by Caesar, are listed at the sides, and there’s a portrait of Caesar at the upper left. The image area measures 38.7 x 50 cm [15¼" x 19¾"] on a larger sheet, with vertical center fold, as issued. There is Latin text on the reverse side, with exetnsive commentary on the Druids. This map is in very good condition, with a tiny scratch in the cartouche and a thin spot in the upper margin, outside of the image area. Two original, antique, copper-plate engraved maps of the Aquitaine region of France on one sheet. They are by Willem Janszoon Blaeu and published by his son Johannes Blaeu in his famous atlas’Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ in Amsterdam in c. The left map is titled’Carte du Bourdelois du pais de Medoc et de la prevoste de Born’. It shows Bayonne in the south and includes the city of Bordeaux and the mouth of the Garonne river. The map on the right is titled’Principatus Benearnia. La Principaute de Bearn’ and shows Dax in the north with Pau identified towards the eastern side of the map. The maps are printed on hand-laid paper and are outline hand-coloured. Both include a decorative title cartouche and distance scale. The printed area (both maps combined) measures approximately 505mm x 385mm with generous margins beyond; Latin text verso. Condition report: Very good overall condition. Light age toning and occasional spotting (mainly to the margins). Faint vertical crease to the right side of the sheet. Small (1.5cm) closed tear to the bottom edge of the sheet, not affecting the printed area. Please study the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition. It extends northwards as far as Rimiez. With the arrival of the railway in 1864, Nice became the vogue destination for aristocratic European hivernants during the winter months. Belle Epoque architecture sprang up throughout the city dramatically expanding its borders and permanently redefining the urban landscape. It is a pull down map but it doesn’t have the pull down mechanism, just a plastic piece across the top and the bottom edge and two hangers on the top (see pics). Comprehending the Archbishoprics of Mentz and Treves, the Electoral Palat, of the Rhine, Duchy of Wirtemberg, Franconia, Swabia, Alsace, Lorrain etc. ¬â Description: This is beautiful 1747 map of the southwestern part of Germany by the British cartographer Emanuel Bowen. It covers the southwestern parts of Germany along with parts of modern day France and Luxemburg. The Duchy of Luxemburg, Wirtember, Swabia, Alsee, Lorrain, Franconia, the Archbishoprics of Mentz and Treves, and the Bishoprics of Augsburg, Bamberg, etc. Cities of Luxemburg, Metz, Nancy, Strasbourg, Basel, Ulm, Baden, Mainz, etc. Includes the important mediaeval and renaissance center of Nuremburg. Today Franconia is a historic district and has been consolidated with Bavaria.
