Pierre Aveline Map Donkerke Dunkirk France Etching Engraving Dated 1661 Antique. This is a handsome original map etching of the city of Dunkirk, France along the coast of the sea by Pierre Alexandre Aveline. This decorative and extremely rare town view of Donkerke (Duinkerle /Dunkirk) France includes a numbered key at the lower part (1-16) to locate key structures. The text at bottom reads in part, ” Fait par Aveline Avec Privildge du Roy”. Pierre Aveline Paris, c. He probably trained with Adam Perelle and like him, specialized in topographical representations… He engraved in suites, many views of Paris and surrounding areas, European and African cities, mixing etching and burin. In 1685 he obtained a royal licence for 10 years authorizing him to reproduce’le profil des maisons. The text at the bottom of this etching reads, Donkerke, ville du Comte’ de Flandre Sur las Coste, de Flandre Sur La par les Espagnol… 1661 Duyn Kercken” (with detailed and numbered descriptions of buildings and structures)”. This etching measures 15 3/4″ x 12″. The plate size measures 14 1/4″ x 10 1/2″. The plate impression is visible. Paper is chainlink when held to the light. There are a couple small nail holes on the extreme edges of the short sides… No creases or bends, slight discoloration to paper as would be expected of an item of this age. The colors are vivid. A really nice first edition example of Part 1 of this famous and sought after treatise on fortifications by Alain Manesson Mallet and published by J. Barbin in Paris in 1671. The book contains an engraved frontispiece and title page, two engraved portraits of Louis XIV and Mallet himself, and 106 engraved plates (complete as published) showing fortifications and techniques for designing and constructing fortifications. Many are shown above finely engraved scenes of fortified towns and cities such as Barcelona, Paris, Venice, Lisbon, Turin, Marseille and many, many more. It comprises part 1 of Mallet’s’Les Travaux de Mars’ only (Part 2 was a survey of other writer’s works on fortifications and Part 3 was not published until the expanded second edition of the work in 1684). Size: 8vo (185 x 130mm). Full Calf with Gilt Spine, five raised bands to spine, binding good with some wear; small loss to bottom right corner of p. 97 (see photograph 6). Title: Insula Corsica, Olin Regni Titulo Insignis nunc Genuensis Reipublicae potestati sujecta, juxta reventissimam designationem. Description: This is a 1742 Covens and Mortier map of Corsica, France. The map depicts the entirety of the island in fantastic detail, labeling cities, towns, and villages, as well as rivers and mountain ranges. Several major cities are illustrated, including Bastia, Saint Florence, Rosoli, and Porto Vecchio. The citadel at Bonifacio is also depicted at the extreme southern end of the island. A decorative title cartouche is situated in the upper left corner, with an explanatory Latin text located in a cartouche in the upper right corner. In the lower left corner, the coat of arms of the short-lived Kingdom of Corsica is illustrated, supported by two herculean-like warriors. The Kingdom of Corsica was founded in 1736 after the island crowned the German adventurer Theodor Stephen Freiherr von Neuhoff the King of Corsica. While in Genoa, Neuhoff met several Corsican rebels and exiles, and succeeded in persuading them that he could free Corsica from Genoese tyranny if they made him king. He landed in Corsica in March 1736 and he was duly elected and crowned king. Upon assuming the throne, Neuhoff became King Theodore I, and he issued edicts, instituted a knighthood, and waged war on the Genoese. At first, he was successful in this campaign, but in-fighting among the rebels led to their defeat. The Genoese put a price on his head and Neuhoff left Corsica in November 1736, ostensibly to seek foreign assistance. After not securing a guarantee of protection from Spain or Naples, he left for Holland where he was arrested for debt in Amsterdam. Neuhoff was again arrested for debt in London in 1755, and only regained his freedom by declaring bankruptcy. He subsisted on the charity of his friends until his death the following year.
