Beautiful Hand Colored antique lithograph, pictorial map “Galliae, ” original 1600′s map by Henrico Hondius is priceless, in a museum, I believe the property of England. This Antique hand colored Lithograph printed on Archer paper, I believe Arches top quality hand made paper by the watermarks. These watermarks are period specific and have allowed the. Dating of this printing. Watermark is as follows : MBM Made In France INGRES D’ ARCHES (in deco print). PRINTED PORTION measures 14 3/4 x 19 7/8 inches this measurement does not include border or frame – printed portion only. Map WITH border and frame is 25 1/4 x 19 3/4 inches. The “MBM” is the initials of the 3 owners of Arches in 1869 when this was added. Early 1900′s examples exist up until about 1910 when only “(France)” in parenthesis appeared rather than “Made In France” and around 1920 “Ingres d Arches” appeared without the Hyphenated “capital D” and without the deco print. I have not and will not remove the map from the frame although the cardboard backing has at some point been loosened and I was able to determine that the map is not adhered to the backing. Background: A fine example of De Rossi’s atlas map, similar to Coronelli’s maps of the same period, with engraved decorative title. The atlas included 150 engraved outline hand colored maps with decorative title cartouche, on 181 sheets. Maps are dated between 1669 and 1715, issued by Giov. De Rossi and Domenico de Rossi, they are mainly derived from Cantelli da Vignola’s maps, an important seventeenth-century cartographer who pioneered the Italian style of fine bold engraving that would eventually be embraced and expanded upon by Vincenzo Coronelli, and Nicolas Sanson (1600 1667) a French cartographer, termed by some the creator of French geography. Many of the maps were engraved by Baudrand, Franciscus Donia, G. Falda, Jean Lhuilier, Vin Mariotti, Gasparo Pietro Santa, Salomon Rogiers, & Giorgio Widman, Lubin, Titi, Ameti, Magini and Mattei. Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi (1627 – 1691) was an Italian printer and publisher active in 17th century Rome.
