Pomponius Mela or Melae. Pomponius Mela is the earliest known Roman geographer with his work being positively dated to 43 AD. His classic DI ORBIS SITU, from which this came, contained descriptions and maps of the known world, which included Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East, and India. This map is an original woodcut engraving, published in Basil in 1564, of GALLIA NARBONENSIS, which includes modern day France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Drawn in the archaic trapezoidal form, but modern in the sense that it is oriented with north at the top. With pictorial representations of cities, mountains, waves on the sea, and two sailing ships. The legend in the bottom margin identifies sites on the map. Very scarce, having survived 454 years! One center vertical fold, as issued. The verso is blank. Printed on high quality, hand-made rag paper. Clean with light age-toning. 5.75 inches high by 7.25 inches. The item “Pomponius Mela 1564 Gallia Narbonensis France Belgium Ships Orig.
