Allegorical map showing Europe in the shape of a woman. The representation of Europa Regina, or Queen of the World, was first drawn by Johannes Bucius in 1537. Her crown, placed on the Iberian peninsula, is shaped after the Carolingian hoop crown. France and the Holy Roman Empire make up the upper part of her body, with Bohemia being the heart. Her long gown stretches to Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Livonia, Bulgaria, Muscovy, Macedonia and Greece. In her arms, formed by Italy and Denmark, she holds a sceptre and an orb (Sicily). When the Europa regina was introduced, Charles V of Habsburg controlled both the Holy Roman Empire and the kingdoms of Spain, claiming to be the universal emperor of Europe. This may explain why the map is oriented westwards to have Spain as the crowned head, and why the imperial insignia sceptre, Carolingian crown, and orb are those of the Holy Roman Emperor. Map comes from the German edition of Sebastian Münsters Cosmography, titled Cosmographey oder beschreibung aller Länder, published in 1628 by Heinrich Petri in Basel. The woodblock of this map was used from 1598. Sebastian Munster (1488 1552). 35,5 x 22,0 cm. This is an original antique map published in 1598 and NOT a modern copy or reprint. Pomponius Mela or Melae. Pomponius Mela is the earliest known Roman geographer with his work being positively dated to 43 AD. His classic DI ORBIS SITU, from which this came, contained descriptions and maps of the known world, which included Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East, and India. This map is an original woodcut engraving, published in Basil in 1564, of GALLIA NARBONENSIS, which includes modern day France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Drawn in the archaic trapezoidal form, but modern in the sense that it is oriented with north at the top. With pictorial representations of cities, mountains, waves on the sea, and two sailing ships. The legend in the bottom margin identifies sites on the map. Very scarce, having survived 454 years! One center vertical fold, as issued. The verso is blank. Printed on high quality, hand-made rag paper. Clean with light age-toning. 5.75 inches high by 7.25 inches. The item “Pomponius Mela 1564 Gallia Narbonensis France Belgium Ships Orig.
