VALOIS 1641 Hand Colored JOANNIS BLAEU Map ANTIQUE France ATLAS MAIOR

1641 Johannes Blaeu map of the Duchy of Valois in France. Valois is located northeast of Paris and the map shows the area between Senlis, Compiègne, Soissons and Meaux, the region is presently included in the modern day department of Seine-et-Marne. The region is known for fine wines, including Champagne, which partially overlaps ancient Valois. Three corners of this map are decorated with decorative cartouche work embellished with hand coloring: an ornamental armorial crest, a baroque mile scale, and a beautiful title cartouche illustrating spear wielding hunters each holding a pair of hunting dogs, one holding a falcon. Dutch text on verso. Original plate mark visible. Paper age-toned with scattered mild foxing. Good and dark impression. The right margin contains a number of small tears and one larger one that stops a good 5/8 inch away from the plate mark, once matted this would never be seen. 15 3/8 x 19 3/4 inches / 390 x 500 mm. Please have a look at our collection of antiquarian maps, bookshop Abelard in Montolieu.

(Northern France, Fontainebleu, River Seine, Forest of Retz, Eure River). Printed for a very rare folio atlas, this loose map offered exactly as acquired. In totally poor condition. Dampstained down both sides, at top corners and across bottom, thin strip of newer linen tape neatly applied on back for reinforcing the centerfold. At middle centerfold are found 3 small “pulls”, spots where the map has stuck to the facing paper and pulled the printed area away leaving a white blank spot behind. However, despite the fairly poor physical condition, the map still has a noble character about it and could readily be framed for display or added to a collection because of the tremendous rarity factor alone. Original fold line as issued. 17 1/8″ H x 23″ W. Printed area measures c. 15 1/2″ H x 20 3/8″ W. We do not sell modern reprints. The item “Ile-de-France le Valois French Vexin Brie 1677 du Val Rare folio antique map” is in sale since Monday, December 24, 2018. This item is in the category “Antiques\Maps, Atlases & Globes\Europe Maps”. The seller is “oldmapsoldbooks” and is located in Dover, New Hampshire. This item can be shipped worldwide.
