Sebastian Münster, a German geographer, cartographer, Hebraist, and theologian, was born in Ingelheim, near Mainz In 1505, he went to Heidelberg to enter the Franciscan order. In 1507 he went to Louvain, where he studied mathematics, geography, and astronomy. In 1509 Münster became a student of Konrad Pelikan, who taught Hebrew and Greek as well as mathematics and cosmography. In 1518 he completed his studies at the University of Tübingen. He was the favorite of the famous mathematician and astronomer Johann Stöffler. In 1524 Münster was appointed professor of Hebrew at Heidelberg University. In 1525 he published his first map as part of a broadside: The Instrument of the Suns combined a map, calendar, astrological almanac, sundial, and nocturnal on one attractive sheet, suitable for wall mounting. In 1540 he published a Latin edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia with illustrations. He based this edition on the Latin translation by Willibald Pirkheimer and produced new maps to supplement the Ptolemaic maps. The twenty-seven maps of the Ptolemaic canon are supplemented by twenty-one new maps. Further editions appeared in 1541 and 1542. In 1544 he published the Cosmographia , a bulky book with 659 pages and some 520 woodcuts. Maps in this edition included three maps from the Ptolemaic canon and fourteen modern maps (from previous editions of the Geographia), as well as nine new maps. Later editions (1545, 1546, 1548) enlarged the Cosmographia. The 1550 edition contains cities, portraits, and costumes. These editions in both Latin and German constitute the full fruition of Münster’s dream of a comprehensive geography. The Cosmographia was one of the most successful works of the 16th century. It passed through 24 editions in 100 years, in different languages, including Latin, French, Italian, English, and even Czech. The last German edition was published in 1628. He died at Basel of the plague in 1552. As a cartographer, Münster deserves special recognition for formulating a plan for a comprehensive and uniform map of a country. As a geographer, his greatest achievement was the Cosmographia. ALSO PLEASE, CHECK OUT MY other items. NO REPRINTS OR MODERN COPIES!!!!!!!!! Be sure to add me to your favorites list. 1768 Addison ITALY SWITZERLAND FRANCE With Map

Rare books at fair prices… Arabia – Middle East. Asia – China & Japan. 1700s Italy and France – Roman Antiquity. Title 1: Addison’s Travels through Italy and Swisserland. Title 2: Travels through France, by Sacheverel Stevens, Gent. With the Remarks of Dr. Smollet, and other Travellers. Author: DRAKE, Edward Cavendish Printed for J. Notes & Condition: Two early travel narratives featuring beautiful copper engravings, including a map of Italy, illustrations of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Ponte Rotto bridge in Rome, Ponte di Augusto in Narni, and a view of Paris. The first recounts a sojourn in Italy and Switzerland by English author Joseph Addison, who visited St. Peter’s only 75 years after its completion. In the summer of 1699 he crossed into France, where, chiefly for the purpose of learning the language, he remained till the end of 1700. In Switzerland, on his way home, he was stopped by receiving notice that he was to attend the army under Prince Eugene, then engaged in the war in Italy, as secretary from the king. But his Whig friends were already tottering in their places; and in March 1702 the death of King William at once drove them from power and put an end to Addison’s pension. For example, of France the author writes: They have not even the implements of cleanliness in this country. If there is no cleanliness among these, much less shall we find delicacy, which is the cleanliness of the mind. Indeed they are utter strangers to what we call common decency; amd I could mention high-flavoured instances, at which even a native of Edinburgh would stop his nose. ” Further includes two brief accounts entitled “A Short Account of Scotland, and the Islands Thereunto Belonging” and “A Concise Description of Ireland. Folio measuring approximately 8 x 13 inches. Altogether 58 pages, numbered from 587 to 644, plus 1 engraved map and 4 copper engraved plates. From the original volume. Two substantial travel narratives, and two shorter accounts, complete, as issued consecutively in the First Edition of the esteemed and extensive compilation by Edward Cavendish Drake, published in two-volumes, titled A New Universal Collection of Authentic and Entertaining Voyages and Travels, from the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time… And which contained other unrelated travel narratives. These are the original pages printed in 1768. Tear to one engraving, repaired to verso, otherwise in very good condition. Attractively bound in recent green cardstock covers with label. Narni, in the commune of Umbria, central Italy, is still of strikingly medieval appearance today, with stone buildings, and narrow cobblestone streets. The town is famous for the largest Roman bridge ever built (Ponte di Augusto), by which the Via Flaminia crossed the Nera. The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter (Basilica Sancti Petri), officially known in Italian as the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano and commonly known as St. Peter’s Basilica, is a Late Renaissance church located within the Vatican City. The Pons Aemilius (Ponte Emilio), today called Ponte Rotto, is the oldest Roman stone bridge in Rome. Preceded by a wooden version, it was rebuilt in stone in the 2nd century BC. In 12 BC, Augustus completely restored the bridge with a tuff and concrete core. Once spanning the Tiber, connecting the Forum Boarium with Trastevere, a single arch in mid-river is all that remains today, lending the bridge the name Ponte rotto (‘Broken bridge’). Laid paper , as seen here, is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process used from the 12th to 18th century. Its use was largely diminished when wove paper was introduced. The traditional laid pattern consists of a series of wide-spaced lines (chain lines) running in the machine direction, or, in hand-made paper, parallel to the shorter sides of the sheet, and narrower lines (laid lines) which are at 90 degrees to the chain lines. This is one of several travel accounts compiled by Edward Cavendish Drake for his monumental work, titled in full, A New Universal Collection of Authentic and Entertaining Voyages and Travels, from the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time. Judiciously Selected from the Best Writers in the English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German, Danish, and other languages. Including an Account of the Most Remarkable Discoveries, Conquests, Settlements, Battles, Sea Fights, Hurricanes, Shipwrecks, Sieges, Tortures, Wonderful Escapes, Massacres and Strange Deliverances, both by Sea and Land. Also a Description of the Buildings, Mountains, Rivers, Harbours, Lakes, Islands, Peninsulas, Creeks, &c. The Whole Forming a History of Whatever is Most Worthy of Notice in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Illustrated with maps from the latest improvements, and beautiful plates, By Grignion, and other Celebrated Masters.
