16 1/2″ x 21″ sight size. 18″ x 22 1/2″ overall. Original map of France on laid (rag) paper. Centered on Cambray and showing Crevecoeur, Bouchain, Castel de Cambresis, Quesnoy, etc. Two coats of arms and two cartouches in the four corners. Dedicated to Francisco Vander Burgh. Fully hand colored coats of arms, with the rest lightly colored. Verso is affixed a letter of authentication from Dr. Dard Hunter of the museum of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, dated May 21, 1953, in which Dr. Hunter surmises the map to be from the Blaeu Novus Atlas of 1676. However, I believe it is probably from the Novus Atlas published around 1640. There is an obvious center crease where it would have been folded in the atlas. Some water stains and age discoloration (visible in the images). Some very mior wrinkling. A FINE EXAMPLE OF AN EXQUISITELY EARLY AND RARE EUROPEAN MAP. SPECIAL NOTE : The map is framed and under glass, and I have not examined it out of the frame. The item “Rare antique map France Johannes Joan Blaeu 1640 Amsterdam Archevesche Cambray” is in sale since Monday, July 22, 2019. Mercator, a Dutch cartographer and geographer, was the most famous geographer of the 16th century, and is still celebrated for the Mercator Projection map type, and for his 1595 Atlas of Europe, published in the year of his death, which basically invented the atlas. Note that this copy does have condition issues – the blue and green inks used in the coloration seem to have oxidized and created some brown adjacent spotting. There are also two moisture spots on the back of the map that have impacted the front side of the map – in the center, and center-right near the edge – see photos. Also staining in the margin area in spots around the whole of the map. Rare in any condition, though, and still nice visual appeal, with good color and nice accents including the sea monster above the cartouche, the ships in the English Channel, and the southern tip of England at the top. Dimensions are 20″ X 17″. The item “Britannia & Normandia Rare Antique Gerardus Mercator Map France Circa 1620s” is in sale since Saturday, August 10, 2019. This item is in the category “Antiques\Maps, Atlases & Globes\Europe Maps”. The seller is “catamountcurios” and is located in Tilton, New Hampshire. This item can be shipped worldwide.

Gold frame with thin blue painted line. One small mark on frame please see photo. Otherwise in Excellent Condition. Story Map of France. 17 x 13.5 inches. Frame: 21 x 18 inches. A detailed and colorful pictorial map of France, filled with drawings of historic sites, incidents and portraits of important French men and women, including explanatory captions. Insofar as there is so much historical information, geography is kept simple, showing major rivers and other bodies of water, counties, cities and towns. There are ships in the oceans both historic vessels and others left uncaptioned and whimsical beings such as the sea monster in the Atlantic Ocean and the merman holding a staff topped by a fleur-de-lis in the compass rose. Other interesting features include the German farthest advance in World War I and a drawing of prehistoric cave paintings in the Dordogne region. A caption in the lower right margin explains that the border design and decorations [are] from 17th century Louis Quinze tapestries and 18th century Robert de otte ornaments. The border also includes a portrait of Napoleon. A small table lists distinguished citizens born in Paris. A tiny credit line in the lower left border above the publication information appears to read A. Another example of this map is in the collection of the Newberry Library (see References below). Colortext Publications published educational books and pictorial maps in the second quarter of the 20th century. A series of Story Maps were published between 1935 and 1950, including maps of Europe, France, Ireland, Scotland, England, Mexico, the United States and the West Indies. Colortext also published maps of France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland during this period by the cartographer and illustrator Ernest Dudley Chase and a map of Kentucky for the H. In addition to Chase, Colortext maps were drawn by Egbert G. Jacobson, Julio de Diego, A. Apparently these maps were intended to engage and educate American youth. In addition, the firm published illustrated booklets about history for children in connection with the Chicago Worlds Fair Century of Progress Exhibition in 1933 and 1934, and maps of Chicago (1938) and a Military Panoramap of the Theatre of War (1940) showing the European theater of World War II.
