An original, antique, copper-plate engraved map of Ancient France, by Willem Janszoon Blaeu and based on the work of Abraham Ortelius. The map is titled’Typus Galliae Veteris, Ex conatib Geograph. And was published by Johannes Blaeu (son of Willem) in his famous atlas’Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ in Amsterdam in c. The map is printed on hand-laid paper and is outline hand-coloured. The map is adorned with a decorative title cartouche. The printed area measures approximately 505mm x 395mm with generous margins beyond; Latin text verso. Condition report: Good overall condition. Age toning and some age spots. Pin-sized hole to the printed area to the right of the centrefold towards the bottom of the map (almost impossible to notice when the map is laid down – but see photo). Small nick to the bottom edge of the sheet and a 1cm closed tear (repaired verso) to the bottom edge of the sheet, not affecting the printed area. Two small stains to the bottom edge of the sheet not affecting the map. Please study the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition. Cette carte du XVIeme siècle est une ancienne gravure représentant la France. Dans un état proche de la perfection pour une carte de son age. On peut toutefois très très vaguement deviner une mouillure en haut à gauche et une légère déchirure, à la limite de l’invisible. 4 restes d’un ancien montage au verso, invisible au niveau de la carte. It includes a very decorative title cartouche with allegorical figures. Cartographer / engraver: Frederik de Wit. Condition: Very good condition. Uncoloured and with centrefold as published. Another old vertical fold adjacent to the centrefold, now flattened. Two tiny holes to the map area,, practically invisible when the map is laid down. Two 1cm closed tears to the bottom edge of the sheet, not affecting the printed area. Please study all the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition. DESCRIPTION Antique original 16th C map of France from the book Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Printed by Francis Hogenberg in 1573 at Antwerp the maps are tipped onto stubs at the centerfold. This map is of Galliae at that time with France being only a small part of the modern day France. The legend of this map names the author whose map Ortelius adapted, in this case Ioanne Ioliveto (Jean Jolivet). This richly engraved map is filled with topographical features and numerous cities. The large strapwork cartouche contains text, and a coat of arms is displayed in the stipple engraved sea. Dutch text on verso. Part of a larger atlas book which was disbound and incomplete when found. This version contained 70 individual maps with 102 contributing cartographers to its catalogue auctorum. In the preface Ortelius credits Franciscus Hogenberg with engraving nearly all the maps. The 1573 Additamentum to the atlas is notable for containing Humphrey Llwyd’s Cambriae Typus, the first map to show Wales on its own. A great addition to your rare antique map collection. MEASUREMENTS Map unfolded measures viewer measures 16″ tall by 20.75″ wide and weighs 2oz. CONDITION In good condition considering age and use. The paper shows signs of age and has some staining and discoloration throughout. There is some tape in the bottom center (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description). RARE, EARLY AND ORIGINAL MAP BY ABRAHAM ORTELIUS. About 16 3/4″ x 21″. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum , first published in 1570. Titled “GALLIAE REGNI POTENTISS NOVA DESCRIPTIO, JOANNE IOLIVETO AUCTORE, ” (“A New Description of the Powerful Kingdom of France per the Accurate work of Jean Jolivet”). Hand colored copper plate engraving on rag (laid) paper. Densely filled with topographical features and numerous cities. Bar scale in French miles, with dividers. The borders are graduated for latitude and longitude. Coat of arms displayed in the Oceanus Occidentalis. The title runs across the top of the map and a there is a text panel within a strapwork cartouche, celebrating the wealth, military courage and education of the French. Manuscript verso in Latin. 527 1598 was a Brabantian cartographer and geographer. Conventionally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas. The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Theatre of the World. Ortelius is often considered one of the founders of the Netherlandish school of cartography. And one of the most notable figures of the school in its golden age (approximately 1570s1670s). The publication of his atlas. In 1570 is often considered as the official beginning of the Golden Age of Netherlandish cartography. He is also believed to be the first person to imagine that the continents were joined together before drifting. To their present positions. Not framed or matted. Hand applied pigments slightly faded in places. Slightly toned with negligible foxing. Cartouche and other colors vibrant. Minor roughage around the edges.
