Parade Antiques and Collectables. C1590 Julius Caesar Gallia Vetus Map of Gaul by Ortelius. A beautiful antique c1590 map of ancient Gaul (France)’GALLIA VETUS Ad July Caesaris commentaria’, following the description provided in Julius Caesar’s’Commentaries of his Gallic Wars’ (De Bello Gallico), from the 1593 supplement of Abraham Ortelius’ famous Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. His close familiarity with the text is immediately apparent in this scholarly, but also highly decorative map. Gaul, as per Caesar’s description, is divided into three parts, following the tribal divisions of the Belgae, Celtae, and Aquitani. Parts of the neighbouring provinces of Hispania, Provincia Romanorum, Cisalpine Gaul, Germania, and Britannia are also depicted. The map is ornamented in beautiful hand colour, and notable geographic features are shown. Principal cities and towns are picked out in red, including’Londinum’ in Britannia. The lands of each Celtic tribe are labelled, and extensive boxed lists on the right and left margins record every tribe, chieftain, and notable individual mentioned in Caesar’s text. The map is further embellished with a wide decorative border, and three strap-work cartouches, enclosing the title, inscription, and a dedication to the Archbishop of Antwerp and Renaissance humanist, Laevinus Torrentius. There is, on the reverse which is not visible because the map is framed, the latin text confirming the painstaking accuracy of Ortelius’ map, stating that no person, place, or region mentioned by Caesar is absent. Abraham Ortelius (1527 -1598) was a Flemish cartographer, cosmographer, geographer and publisher and a contemporary of Gerard Mercator, with whom he travelled through Italy and France. Although it is Mercator who first used the word “Atlas” as a name for a collection of maps, it is Ortelius who is remembered as the creator of the first modern atlas. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ was the first systematically collated set of maps by different map makers in a uniform format. The map is in very nice condition, with a slightly faded palette of colours and a bit of bruising and small crack to the lower paper where it folded. The picture is mounted, glazed and framed in gilt wood. Size of Print: 47.5 x 36.5 cm (18 ¾ x 14 3/8 inches) Size of Frame: 67.5 x 57 x 1.5 cm (26 ½ x 22 ½ x 5/8 inches) Weight: 3620 g. Gallia Vetus ORTELIUS original map of Ancient FRANCE De Bello Gallico Cesar

Gallia Vetus, Ad Iulij Caesaris commentaria. Fine and early historical. Nice Ortelius’ map of Ancient France based on Caesar’s De Bello Gallico. It is engraved to show the mountains, rivers and forests with only a few ancient place names. The names of famous people and tribes of Gallia, as described by Caesar, are listed at sides. Embellished map with tiny ships sailing in the seas and three strapwork cartouches containing the title, scale and dedication, all surrounded in an elaborately engraved border. From the rare 1624 edition of Ortelius’s Parergon in quo Veteris Geographiae aliquot tabulae… Nomenclator Ptolemaicus with the text by Balthasar Moretus. Orteliuss Parergon began as a companion to his Theatrum but eventually it became an independent work. In fact, this collection of maps of the ancient world was so significant that it became the model for all historical atlases published throughout the seventeenth century. The maps and plates in the Parergon have to be evaluated as the most outstanding engravings. Depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century (Koeman). Unlike the Theatrum, which consisted of existing maps reengraved by Ortelius, the maps in the Parergon were drawn by Ortelius himself. As a scholar of antiquity, a dealer in antiques, and a visitor to ancient sites, he was well prepared to execute the maps and all the maps from the Parergon reflect his passion for the ancient world. From: Theatri Orbis Terrarum Parergon; Sive Veteris Geographiae Tabulae, Commentarijs Geographicis et Historicis illustratae… Size: Printed area measures 36 x 46 cm on sheet 46 x 56 cm. 1773 Original Antique Map FRANCE GAULE GAUL GALLIA in ROMAN TIMES by Bonne

1773 – Original Antique Map FRANCE GAULE GAUL GALLIA in ROMAN TIMES by Bonne. A fine and rare original antique map titled. Carte de la GAULE pour servir a la lecture de l’Histoire Ancienne. ATLAS MODERNE OU COLLECTION DE CARTES SUR TOUTES LES PARTIES DU GLOBE TERRESTRE c1775. An appealing 1763 map of Gallia or France in ancient Roman times by the French cartographer Rigobert Bonne. Covers the region from southern part of England (Britannia) to the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. Details mountains, rivers, cities, roadways, and lakes with political divisions highlighted in outline color. Gaul or Gallia was the ancient name of a region of Western Europe which comprises of modern day France, Luxembourg, Belgium, most of Switzerland and Germany west of the Rhine. After the Gallic Wars of 58-51 BC, all of Gaul came under the control of the Romans. It continued under Roman control for almost 500 years before it fell to the Franks in AD 486. The Gallic Wars are believed to have been fought primarily to provide Caesar with wealth and popularity and to boost his political career rather than being a defensive action as described by Caesar. The campaigns are described by Caesar in his book. COMMENTARII DE BELLO GALLICO. A decorative title cartouche appears in the top left hand quadrant. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the HYDROGRAPHER AT THE DEPOT DE LA MARINE. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal. Bonne would later become the Geographer to the King of France. 1743 – 1793 was a Paris based bookseller, engraver, and map publisher active in the mid to late 18th century. Lattre published a large corpus of maps, globes, and atlases in conjunction with a number of other important French cartographic figures, including Janvier, Zannoni, Bonne and Delamarche. He is also known to have worked with other European cartographers such as William Faden of London and the Italian cartographer Santini. Paris court records indicate that Lattre brought charges against several other period map publishers, including fellow Frenchman Desnos and the Italian map engraver Zannoni, both of whom he accused of copying his work. Lattre’s offices and bookshop were located at 20 rue St. Overall size of the map is 48cm x 36cm with large margins, perfect for mounting & framing CONDITION: Excellent overall condition with contemporary hand colouring and the usual centrefold, as issued. As would be expected with antique maps of nearly 250 years old, there will be some slight ageing and toning, but once mounted and framed, will not be noticable. ORTELIUS Map GALLIA VETUS Julius Caesar Ancient Gaul France 1635 Willem Blaeu

Abraham Ortelius’ map of ancient Gaul in original hand color, published by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, Amsterdam, 1635. The map is titled Gallia Vetus, Ad iul Caesaris Commentaria, ex conatibus geographicis Abrah Ortelii. In a decorative cartouche. Ortelius’ depiction of ancient France is based on information from Caesar’s De Bello Gallico, which begins with the frequently quoted phrase “Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres”, meaning “Gaul is a whole divided into three parts, ” inhabited by the Belgae, the Aquitani, and the Celts. This map labels Gaul’s three parts, as well as the Roman province on the north shore of the Mediterranean, and shows mountains, rivers and forests, with only a few ancient place names, including Parisi (Paris). The names of famous people and tribes of Gallia, as described by Caesar, are listed at the sides, and there’s a portrait of Caesar at the upper left. The image area measures 38.7 x 50 cm [15¼" x 19¾"] on a larger sheet, with vertical center fold, as issued. There is Latin text on the reverse side, with exetnsive commentary on the Druids. This map is in very good condition, with a tiny scratch in the cartouche and a thin spot in the upper margin, outside of the image area. Please see the scans, which include front and back views of the entire sheet, and feel free to ask any questions.
