1603 Ortelius Map TOURAINE France Tours & Loire Environs Decorative & Detailed

Touraine – Turonensis Ducatus et Confinium Galliae Celticae Descriptio. 46.5 cm x 36.5 cm copperplate engraving, 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1598, printed 1603. We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the French province of Touraine. Only 300 imprints for this 1603 Latin edition are believed to have been issued, and the masterfully engraved map is deservedly one of the most sought-after of all the French regional maps of Ortelius. This well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an outstanding presentation if matted and framed. Tours and environs – note tiny bridges and trees. Many of the ornate cartouches used by Ortelius’ engravers were taken from a series of ornament prints published in the 1560s by the brilliant architect, painter, designer and graphic artist Hans Vredeman de Vries. Map provides the latitude and longitude of the “Duchy” in an inset box. François is credited for the cartography in the Latin form of his name (Ysaaco Franco) in the supplemental cartouche. Legend lists islands in the Loire – note elegant calligraphy. To get a sense of map detail consider that the mileage scale seen below measures just 7 cm from 1 to 5 actual size. The Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself and we offer representative excerpts below derived from the 1606 English edition published in London. T he inhabitants of Tours are held to be one of the richest people in all France, both for the fruitfulness of their fields (which they deservedly call the King’s Garden) and also for their excellent manner of government and the industry of their citizens. Who are especially addicted to commerce and traffic, for which purpose their navigable river stands them in great stead… They have also attempted of late to make silk, and that of Italy affords no better quality… Outside the city of Montrichard there are underground houses, with gardens and vineyards above them.. Condition – Please note carefully: The map – more than four centuries old – is in overall very good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct platemark on fine laid paper with watermark, image area essentially pristine. Remnants of an old binding strip are present on verso and its outline is visible on recto on both sides of and parallel to centrefold. Map exhibits creasing in this are all along centrefold in a band 2 cm wide as can be evaluated in photos. Map exhibits several areas of “as issued” excess ink from the original impression as can be evaluated in photos; presumably the plate was not wiped entirely clean prior to the imprint. While certainly somewhat pronounced, we do not consider this a significant issue at all, even a somewhat charming reminder that these intaglio maps are individual hand-made works of art. Trivial show-through of text on verso in margin only as is usual In all, a very fine example of a much sought-after map that will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. 1603 Ortelius Map ANJOU France Angers & Loire Environs Decorative & Detailed

Andegavensium Ditionis Vera et Integra Descriptio. 46.5 cm x 35.5 cm copperplate engraving, 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1579, printed 1603. We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the Anjou. Along with those elements, the map presents charming pictorial topography, towns, forests and bridges making this is one of the most decorative of all the Ortelius regional maps of France. This well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an outstanding presentation if matted and framed. Tours and environs – legend at left names the numbered islands in the Loire. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Angers to Saumur as seen below measures just 12 cm actual size. The winged sphinx guards the mileage scale under the watchful gaze of a snail. Strange armless figures flank the somewhat over-the-top title cartouche with incense burners and fruit garlands – Guyet is credited as author of the map. Legend at lower left lists numbered islands in the Loire – notation at upper left advises that the Danius bridge separates Anjou from Brittany. Notation to the right of publishing privilege cartouche marks the site of the 1569 Battle of Moncontour between Hugenot forces and the Catholic army of Charles IX. The Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself and we offer representative excerpts below derived from the 1606 English edition published in London. The wine of Anjou excels all other French wines… The antiquity of Angers is evident from the ancient ruins of a theatre which overhangs the city, called by the common people Brohan. Ancient coins are sometimes found here, and in the year 1389 Lewis II established a university in this place… Much of what we have presented in this narration is from Belleforest who is the French Münster.. The vertical crease to the right of centrefold is somewhat pronounced. Map exhibits creasing in this are all along centrefold in a band 2 cm wide as can be evaluated in photos. Short interal crease in lower right margin just crossing neatline before terminating, a few trivial spots to margin extremities, some bleed-through of colour on verso. In all, a very fine example of a much sought-after map that will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Welcome and we encourage you to visit our other listings.
