A DATED ORIGINAL RIGOBERT BONNE COPPER PLATE MAP. FROM THE 18th CENTURY FRENCH ATLAS: GRENET – ATLAS PORTATIF Atlas portatif pour servir a l’intelligence des auteurs classiques. L’abbé Grenet professeur au Collège de Lisieux. Dédié à L’université de Paris. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL ENGRAVING OVER 200 YEARS OLD HAND COLOURED ON HAND MADE PAPER. The page measures approximately 14 1/2 inches x 10 1/2 inches (370mm x 270mm). This scarce map is a genuine 18th century original. Fine quality HAND MADE LAID PAPER. This attractive and important map was produced by Rigobert Bonne, a significant cartographer during the period of late 18th century. Original hand coloured detail. Titled with date of printing. This map will look superb when framed. A scarce and collectable investment. In 1773 Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to the King of France (Louis XV & Louis XVI) in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Bonnes work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. Pierre Aveline Map Donkerke Dunkirk France Etching Engraving Dated 1661 Antique. This is a handsome original map etching of the city of Dunkirk, France along the coast of the sea by Pierre Alexandre Aveline. This decorative and extremely rare town view of Donkerke (Duinkerle /Dunkirk) France includes a numbered key at the lower part (1-16) to locate key structures. The text at bottom reads in part, ” Fait par Aveline Avec Privildge du Roy”. Pierre Aveline Paris, c. He probably trained with Adam Perelle and like him, specialized in topographical representations… He engraved in suites, many views of Paris and surrounding areas, European and African cities, mixing etching and burin. In 1685 he obtained a royal licence for 10 years authorizing him to reproduce’le profil des maisons. The text at the bottom of this etching reads, Donkerke, ville du Comte’ de Flandre Sur las Coste, de Flandre Sur La par les Espagnol… 1661 Duyn Kercken” (with detailed and numbered descriptions of buildings and structures)”. This etching measures 15 3/4″ x 12″. The plate size measures 14 1/4″ x 10 1/2″. The plate impression is visible. Paper is chainlink when held to the light. 18th c. Hand Colored Map of Artois, France (Wm. De I'Isle-John Senex dated 1710)

This lovely mad is entitled ARTOIS AND THE COUNTRY ADJACENT. I believe the map to have been originally engraved by William de I’Ilse. I think this was Senex’s revision of deI’Ilse’s original work. In addition to this, he was an engraver, astrologer, explorer, geologist and geographer to Queen Anne of Great Britain. He was elected to the fellowship of the Royal Society in London in 1828. This map is 26″ x 20″. It was hand colored at the time of its creation (or shortly thereafter). It is on hand laid paper and has light uniform age toning. Three corners have folds and there are minor tears in the margins no extending into the image. The upper edge has evidence of the map having been bound into an atlas at one time. The item “18th c. Hand Colored Map of Artois, France (Wm. De I’Isle-John Senex dated 1710)” is in sale since Thursday, April 26, 2018. This item is in the category “Antiques\Maps, Atlases & Globes\Europe Maps”.
