Large Map of Ancient France by Jean Baptiste D’Anville 1783. Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. Jean Baptiste Bourguignon D’Anville (1697- 1782) was a French Cartographer and map maker working in Paris in the middle of the 18th Century. He became one of the most highly regarded cartographer of his time, because of the accuracy of his work and his ability to build on and improve the work of previous cartographers. This map first appeared in’Geographie Ancienne et Abregee’ first published in 1769 but republished in many languages in subsequent years. This comes from a copy printed by Christopher Weigel in Nuremberg in 1784. Page size is 77cm by 57cm. Map area is in good condition for age, engravings are clear. Some stains and marks. Original antique map WEST EUROPE, GERMANY, SPAIN, ITALY, FRANCE, D’Anville, 1794

An original, antique, copper-plate engraved map of much of Western Europe by Monsieur D’Anville for’A Complete Body of Ancient Geography’. Originally produced in 1771, this map was published in Laurie & Whittle’s English edition in 1795 (although note that the map itself is dated 1794 at the bottom). The map has outline hand-colouring and measures approximately 475mm x 505mm with good sized margins beyond; blank verso except for the plate number’13′ in the corner. Condition report: Excellent condition overall. Centrefold as published; crease to lower left corner not affecting the printed area. Please study the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition.
