Mercator, a Dutch cartographer and geographer, was the most famous geographer of the 16th century, and is still celebrated for the Mercator Projection map type, and for his 1595 Atlas of Europe, published in the year of his death, which basically invented the atlas. Note that this copy does have condition issues – the blue and green inks used in the coloration seem to have oxidized and created some brown adjacent spotting. There are also two moisture spots on the back of the map that have impacted the front side of the map – in the center, and center-right near the edge – see photos. Also staining in the margin area in spots around the whole of the map. Rare in any condition, though, and still nice visual appeal, with good color and nice accents including the sea monster above the cartouche, the ships in the English Channel, and the southern tip of England at the top. Dimensions are 20″ X 17″. The item “Britannia & Normandia Rare Antique Gerardus Mercator Map France Circa 1620s” is in sale since Saturday, August 10, 2019. This item is in the category “Antiques\Maps, Atlases & Globes\Europe Maps”. The seller is “catamountcurios” and is located in Tilton, New Hampshire. This item can be shipped worldwide.

Matted, glazed and framed. This is in fine condition. Delisle’s map first appeared in 1703. The Covens firm did not begin until the late 1720′s. First issued in 1703, thus richly detailed map provides the most accurate rendering of the Great Lakes of the time, with the lakes fully enclosed and properly placed in longitude and latitude. Delisle’s map of Canada and the Great Lakes is one of the most outstanding and influential maps of the eighteenth century. Detroit marks it debut on this map, only two years after it’s founding. Delisle’s cartography is very meticulous and adds new information from Joliet, Franquelin, and the Jesuit explorers. It correctly positions the Ohio River but confuses it name with Wabash River. West of the Mississippi Lahontan’s fictitious Riviera Longue is prominently depicted. In Canada special attention is given to the rivers and Lakes between Hudson Bay and St Lawrence, and Lac de Assenipoils (Lake Winnipeg) connects to Hudson Bay. Sanson’s three islands of the Arctic are retained. The exquisite cartouche with the beaver, natives, priest and friars, was engraved by Guerard. This is the second state of the map and remains essentially unchanged from the first edition. This 1730 issue by Covens and Mortier, described by Tooley as re-engraved by a close copy of the original, is about 7.5 cm narrower than the 1703 edition. This hung in my grandparents home in France back in the early 1930′s. Visit my page for more Vintage and Antique items. Ant Map Frederik de Wit after Blaeu of Alsatia (Alsace, France) Circa 1680s

Antique Map by Willem Blaeu & Son Joan. Of Alsatia (Alsace) (Province in France). Circa 1680s Hand Colored. Frederik de Wit Restrike. Would make a great gift or keep for yourself! This is a beautiful antique map engraving. The map was originally done Willem Blaeu of Amesterdam, around 1645 by his son Joan. When Joan died in the early 1670s, and there was also a fire at the Blaeu business, a F. So, this engraving is in our opinion a circa 1680s restrike of the original engraving. The Kennedy Galleries (one of the oldest art galleries in the United States), noted below, thought the map may have dated to 1663 to 1667. You be the judge before acquiring. This engraving is not some modern reproduction of this map. Old paper and aging to piece consistent with being over 330 years old. Not sure what version of this map this one actually is. Any help with that would be much appreciated. Beautiful hand coloring and details. Lots of blue red, and gold hand colored areas. Great images of angels around the map title at the top and the inset map of the DuPont area in the lower left. There is the number “54″ is written in old brownish ink in the upper right corner. May be the plate number from the Map Atlas the map was originally in. Has something like “Long Com 10″ written in cursive in brown ink in the lower right corner of the engraving. No foxing or brown of the paper. Some very minor spotting in places The map was once folded down the middle. So, the map probably came out of an Atlas. We see no rips, tears or repairs to the engraving. The engraving was professionally mounted in a gold colored wood frame with white and red matting. Frame’s gold finish shows some loss. The backing is intact on the frame to keep dust and dirt off of the engraving. The hanging wire is still in place. Has labels on the back from the Kennedy Galleries of 5th Avenue New York that says the engraving dates to 1663 to 1667. Then another gallery label from The Treasury of America’s Prints in Wykoff, NJ whom probably did the most recent framing and matting of the piece. The Antique Frederik de Wit Map after Willem & Joan Blaeau in frame is 26.25″ tall, by 29-1/8″ across, by. The map showing within the matting is 19.5″ tall by 22-5/8″ across.
