Description: This is a scarce example of John Moore’s 1797 map of the French department of Meuse. The map covers the department of Meuse along with the neighboring of Ardenne, Luxembourg, Moselle, Meurte and Marne. This area is part of the Lorraine or Alsace-Lorraine wine region. It is also known for its production of Brie de Meaux cheeses. In fact, more than 60% of Brie de Meaux production takes place in Meuse. This map was drawn to illustrate General Dumourier’s campaign on the Meuse in 1792, during the French Revolution. The routes of the march of Kellerman from Metz, the march of the Duke of Brunswick to the camp of La Luna, the march of Doumorle, and others are noted throughout. The map also identifies several important towns, rivers, roads, battlegrounds and other topographical details. Published by the Scottish physician John Moore in the 1797 edition of his Journal During a Residence in France. Size: Printed area measures 11 inches high by 13 inches wide. Genuine vintage dated 1960 school map as were used until end of 1970′s years in the French schools, by M. I Editions (for la Maison De l’Instituteur). This one is double-sided and depicts on one side the French food industries with on lower left corner an interesting list of the French cheeses and their production areas, please view my photo close-ups as they are important part of the description. The other side is in lovely shades of mauve, lavender, cream and blue and shows the largest towns of France, Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux… And their population after the 1954 census. Measuring 35.75″ H x 31″1/8 W(91cm H x 79cm l). VERY GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION WITH TWO minor tears to the edge ALL SHOWN THAT SURELY DON’T DETRACT. 1650 Blaeu Map of the French Wine & Cheese Region of Languedoc, France -ORIGINAL. This beautiful map of the province of Languedoc, the French winemaking region in southern France by Willem Bleau dates to circa 1650. Covers from Auvergne to the Mediterranean and includes extraordinary detail throughout, noting several towns, rivers and topographical features. The region of Languedoc is one of the largest wine producing region in France with some of the oldest vineyards. It is also famous for the production of cheeses including the Pelardon and Perail cheeses. Languedoc is also an important stopping point on the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. Original hand color with gold highlights.
