Canada ou Nouvelle France original copper-engraved map, A. M. Mallet, c1719

A small copper-engraved print on rag-based paper showing a naive view of the east coast of North America as it was known to Europeans in the mid-17th century. It shows the extent of French, English, Dutch and Swedish attempts at colonization. The fact that it was published more a decade after the Dutch and Swedes had abandoned their colonial ambitions in the region is evidence of the glacial pace of cartographic knowledge transfer at the time. Many First Peoples are identified and located in specific areas. The Great Lakes have not yet been fully mapped; Lake Ontario is Lac Saint Louis. There is a vignette of a native family in the the top left corner based on stereotypical European understanding. The image was originally produced by Mallet for his multi-volume magnum opus entitled: “Description de l’Univers”, which was published in Paris in 1683 during the reign of Louis XIV. This example is an original print taken from the 1719 German edition. The page is approximately 20cms x 16.5cms. The printed image is approximately 14cms X 10 cms.
