1633 (1585) Mercator Map SOUTHERN FRANCE Pyrénées to Monaco to Burgundy SCARCE

Aquitania Australis Regnu Arelatense Cum Cinfinijs. 47.5 cm x 35.5 cm copperplate engraving, 56 cm x 47.5 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved in Duisberg circa 1585, printed in Amsterdam 1633. We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the map (Van der Krogt 4002:1) of southern France compiled by the renowned Gerard Mercator. Bisected by the Rhone, the map follows the Mediterranean coast from Monaco into Spain and extends from south of the Pyrénées well into Burgundy. Mercator’s eponymous world map projection. Which in the felicitous phrase of his biographer. Nicholas Crane “reconciled the sphere and the plane”, combined with his unsurpassed dedication and skill as a cartographer and engraver make him without question the most famous mapmaker of all time. This example of the map was printed for the 1633 German edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The master engraver (and a fine geographer in his own right) Jodocus Hondius. Given the quality of the cartography and the superb engraving work including elegant calligraphy, it is no surprise that Mercator’s maps were still unsurpassed and continued to be issued decades after the plates were engraved as is the case here. Quite decorative with bold pictorial topography, this example exhibits hand colour work of the finest calibre, and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the garlanded strapwork title caroutche – many of the ornate cartouches used by Mercator, Ortelius and other mapmakers of the time were derived from a series of ornament prints by the Dutch polymath Hans Vredeman de Vries. Note how plate is engraved with wavy lines in the Gironde estuary to illustrate outflow. Mileage scale and Mercator’s publishing privilege are presented in Spain – note bold pictorial representation of Pyrénées. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Lyon to Geneva as seen below measures just 7 cm actual size. Note elegant calligraphy throughout – Mercator was a master calligrapher and wrote a highly influential treatise on the use of the “italic hand”. Provence and the lower Rhone – map shows Monaco, Nice and Antibes. To illustrate the cachet the Mercator name brought to marketing the Mercator-Hondius atlas, the famous frontispiece seen below shows Jodocus Hondius in fruitful collaboration with the great man himself, a wholly fictitious scenario. Still, the Hondius clan deserves great credit for rejuvenating Mercator’s Atlas and bringing to fruition the kind of cartographic collection Mercator originally envisioned. Note the small dog by the armillary sphere – symbol of the Hondius family and their printer’s mark De wackere Hondt (the watchful dog). The extensive German text on verso (derived by the Hondius firm from a variety of sources) is a fascinating document in and of itself – we present excerpts derived from the 1636 English edition below. Caesar divideth Gallia from Aquitania by the Gironde. It riseth out of the Pyrenaean Mountains and having visited Bordeaux and other places mingles itselfe with the Aquitanian Sea, by a mouth of two leagues breadth; at that entrance whereof there are some rocks which are called the Asses… ” “The Rhone was knowne by all Writers both the Greeke, who called it Podanos, and the Latine. Woodcut device on verso. Condition – Please note carefully: This 379-year-old map is in excellent condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with prominent platemark, image area essentially pristine, centrefold as issued. Map exhibits some minor offset, most notably the afterimage of left border present in right margin; the extent of the offset can be evaluated in each of the large detail photos. Trivial soft creasing to margin extremities and verso exhibits small University of Copenhagen library stamp; deaccessioned with proper provenance. Part of original binding strip present on verso with its outline faintly visible on recto. Minor soiling and two trivial repaired chips to margin extremities. In all a fine example of an scarce and beautifully engraved map with superb hand colour work that will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. Antique Map-FRANCE-PICARDIE-CHAMPAGNE-Mercator-1590

Description: Published in Amsterdam by Mercator/Hondius ca. Artists and Engravers: Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without serious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator’s sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years.
